Happy Zozobra, Santa Fe! We feel Autumn on the horizon!

“Although the Squash Katsina participates in some Winter and Spring dances for healing and agriculture, it’s primarily known as a runner. The Squash Katsina, at the dances, challenge young and old to races. Whether he wins or loses, he receives a payment in food. They also provide water when needed for germinating the crops. He is the Chief Katsina of the Pumpkin Clan. Pumpkins or squash are grown along side corn and beans as one of the mythological ‘Three Sisters’ of agriculture. The corn stalk grows upward toward the sun, the beans climb the corn stalks and the squash spreads itself around the base to keep the water from evaporating from the crops.”
