Native artist Danielle SeeWalker went to the West Bank this summer for two weeks to make a series of murals with Palestinians.

“The theme of all the murals was this allyship and understanding of Native Americans and Palestinians and shared paralleled history,” SeeWalker said. “First Nations people ... had their land taken. We had food sovereignty taken away from us, language lost. I mean, a lot of the very similar things that my community and ancestors went through, they’re experiencing now.”

I’m here in Spokane for ATALM 2026! On Wednesday, I’ll be presenting with Dr. Denise Bossy about our work on Visualizing Indigenous Florida and the importance of Indigenous artists creating our own images and telling our own stories.

Our presentation, Session 209-Visual Sovereignty as Antidote to Colonial Narratives: A New Public Art Series, is Wednesday, September 23 from 1:45–2:15 PM.

I’m excited to share more about this project and the incredible artists who have been a part of it. Hope to see some of you there!
