Establishing Matilija Salon

Matilija was the name of a Chumash village by a river in what is now called Meiners Oaks about an hour and a half north of Los Angeles. It is also the name of a mythical figure of legend, Chief Matilija, which tells the creation story of the Matilija Poppy.

Protecting creative space is something that I am quite passionate about. Particularly space where the artist is doing transformative work that is risky and perhaps not recognized and validated by the world.

And this constant onslaught and pressure to conform and produce is quite threatening and the capacity for the artist to survive it is in no way certain.

We see this consumption and destruction and we see those who simply thrive on attention suck all the energy and take up all the space. So, like I said, protecting a certain kind of creative space is of peak importance to me and something I have been doing most of my life.

A group exhibition featuring eight talented photographers alongside renowned New Mexico artist Cody S. Brothers, opening April 24 and running through April 26, 2026, celebrating Worldwide Pinhole Day!

The exhibition highlights the work of students from Brothers’ pinhole photography course—each presenting 3 of their strongest works—alongside new pieces by Brothers himself. Working with one of photography’s oldest and most elemental techniques, the exhibition explores the quiet magic of lensless image-making, where time, light, and patience replace automation and precision.

Students in Alphabetical Order: Dane Bass, Heidi Cost, Barbara Deaux, Nan Keegan, Michael Keslin, Cressandra Thibodeaux, Greg Tickle and Ashton Thornhill.
