I want to sincerely thank Brian D’Ambrosio for becoming, if only momentarily, a spokesperson for my art.
His wonderful interview for the monthly newspaper Prime Time, titled “Faces, Form, and Flow: Jo Mata’s Sensory Worlds,” conducted with such genuine insight and sensitivity, gave my work a voice.
Art that challenges, that questions, that dares to be socially conscious too often goes unseen. That is why I value even more your courage and your vision, Brian—for speaking about my art, and about my life.

Yesterday, I had the immense privilege of reading an article by an author I met during the , when she visited my studio this past month. Her name is Diahann Reyes-Lane. She was drawn to one of my paintings, "Blending In", which inspired her to write a most compelling essay—full of soul, intelligence, and depth.
Her article is invaluable and captivating, both in form and content. It is thought-provoking, relatable, powerful… human.
I fall short in describing her engaging writing, especially when compared to the profound way she uses words to express her experience as a mixed-race woman and her relationship with her surroundings.

Title: Blending in.

Our capacity to adapt and excel when living in a new environment. Being constantly challenged by a new language, cultural barriers, racism…solitude. The sense of identity and belonging greatly exacerbated. But…l am a woman…an artist and an alchemist who can transform what is at hand, and transmute it into new experiences and learnings. I transform metals into gold!
