A special thank you to Eleanor and Brad, whose incredible care and dedication brought "Lucid Perturbations" to life across both floors of the gallery. Installing more than 200 sewn works by China Marks was no small feat, and their thoughtful installation helped transform the space into the immersive multiverse Marks envisioned.

From large-scale tableaux to intimate sewn books, every work was placed to invite close study and discovery. We are grateful for the time, precision, and attention they brought to this extraordinary exhibition.

"Lucid Perturbations," on view through July 11, 2026.

Director Carina Evangelista on China Marks’s "The Tourist" ✨

In one of Marks’s favorite works, a lone figure rides in a rickshaw—her head exaggerated in scale, towering over the figure who pulls her. This imbalance becomes an unmistakable metaphor for economic disparity.

A charged exchange unfolds:
“That is a splendid bird, what do you call it?”
“We call it the clever bird, because it is the only one we cannot catch. We have eaten all the rest.”

Rendered in vibrant pinks, greens, and lush decorative tones, the work initially feels playful, almost idyllic. But as with much of Mark’s practice, a darker narrative emerges.

Here, the idyllic gives way to a reflection on environmental degradation and overconsumption. A final, unsettling realization lingers: this tourist did not expect to discover how hungry the natives were.

On view through July 11, 2026. Stop in to experience "Lucid Perturbations."

Visitors lingered over every detail during the opening of "Lucid Perturbations," captivated by the extraordinary sewn books and tableaux of China Marks. With over 200 works spanning twenty-three years of relentless making, the exhibition reveals Marks’s singular vision—one filled with surreal allegory, dark humor, psychological drama, and uncanny beauty.

After pivoting from painting and sculpture to sewing in 2001, Marks produced more than 600 sewn works, transforming thread into a drawing medium of astonishing precision and emotional depth. As guests carefully turned the pages of her handmade books and studied the densely layered imagery, the gallery became a space of curiosity, wonder, and quiet awe.

During the recent curator talk for "Lucid Perturbations," gallery director Carina Evangelista took a moment to recognize the extraordinary team behind China Marks’s largest solo exhibition to date. Spanning both floors of the gallery and over 200 sewn works, this landmark exhibition was made possible through the dedication, collaboration, and care of many hands.

As Carina shared during the talk, "Lucid Perturbations" marks the first building-wide exhibition in Zane Bennett’s 21-year history—a fitting tribute to the singular vision and immense artistic legacy of China Marks.
