Today is the day! Have you had a meaningful experience with Adventure Rec watching a sunset, making a new friend, or hiking to the top of a trail you never thought you could do? If so, consider donating to our giving day campaign to help support student leadership.

Today we’re trying to raise $15,000 from 200 donors to support student leadership opportunities through the Nik Madsen Endowment for Whole Heart Leadership. The minimum donation is $5, and you can donate at https://givingday.ucsc.edu/giving-day/58746/department/58856.

“The Rec is a place of belonging, adventure, challenge, and compassion. Working and leading here for the last four years has been the most rewarding and impactful thing I could have ever imagined or wanted for myself in college. I feel extremely grateful to have been able to participate in the trainings and certifications funded by the Nik Madsen Memorial Endowment over the last few years, and know that I would not be where I am today as a leader without them.”- Kinley Hartigan (Rec Leader)

Hi Friends. Our Adventure Rec project started out Giving Day with two specific goals: 1) 200 unique donors and 2) raise $26k for the Nik Madsen Memorial Endowment for Whole Heart Leadership.

Here's what happened: 1) 229 donors contributed and 2) $37,005 were raised!!!

This total includes meeting the Madsen family’s $10,000 matching gift, as well challenge bonuses earned throughout the day, including: 1) $500 for second place in the Early Riser Challenge 2) $1,500 for the Mid Day Motivator 3) $7,500! for the All Day Challenge for the project with the most number of unique donors!

This Giving Day total adds 50% to the Nik Madsen Memorial Endowment, bringing the endowment total to over $110,000 in its first two years. Simply amazing.

Thank you.

The spirit of the Rec is alive and well, and our love for Nik shines bright. Thank you for sharing in the belief that the outdoors and student leadership can positively impact our worlds. And what a time to believe in a better world.

Have a lovely day friends!

It's not over yet!

If the NIk Endowment project stays on top of the university leaderboard for the most number of unique donors, a bonus $7,500 goes towards the endowment! Already today over 140 donors have contributed more than $22,000! And we've successfully met the Madsen family's $10,000 match. Please consider sharing the donation page with anyone you know so we can continue to add to our amount of unique donors.

We have been overwhelmed by the support for the Nik Endowment and we are closing in on our goal of $26,000! Thank you thank you thank you from the Rec department and future Nik Endowment recipients.

“These three qualities are invaluable to the leader: 1) compassion for all creatures, 2) material simplicity, 3) a sense of equality.” - The Tao of Leadership

Adventure Rec student leaders are the pillar of our program.

Your Giving Day gift on September 30 builds the Nik Madsen Memorial Endowment for Whole Heart Leadership. Interest earned from the endowment allows us to annually award student leaders with financial support to pursue professional development through the National Outdoor Leadership School and many other reputable organizations.

Effective Sunday, March 15, both the East and West Fitness and Recreation Facilities will be closed until further notice.

Dear Athletics, Fitness & Recreation Member,

As UC Santa Cruz implements proactive measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, we are making changes to our operations. To that end, we are closing our East and West Recreation Facilities effective Sunday, March 15th. While there has not yet been a confirmed case of COVID-19 on campus, we want to take precautionary steps in our effort to reduce interaction between participants, students, professional staff, as well as our community membership. This aligns with guidance issued by the Santa Cruz Health Department to limit gatherings of 50 or more people and promote social distancing. Our outdoor fields, jogging path, hiking trails, west tennis and basketball courts and fitness multi-station remain available for your use.

University information on COVID-19 can be found here.

If you have any items stored in a locker that you need, you may access the facility during the following times:

Monday, March 16th from 6:00 am - 9:00 am and 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

Tuesday, March 17th from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm and 4:00 - 7:00 pm

We will continue to monitor the situation as we determine when partial or full opening of facilities can be restored.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we all work together to navigate this challenging time.

Stay Well Slugs,

Sue Harriman Director
