Sunset lovers, this one is for you!

My painting “Light the Way” captures that moment when the town grows still for a few minutes. I love it when I get down to the beach for sunset, and it’s a whole spectator event going on. Countless strangers, connected in this shared moment of awe over nature’s show!

What else I love about Santa Cruz is the sense of community. Seemingly everywhere I go, I’ll run into someone I know. And most of us share a big love of living in our seaside town! There are seemingly endless opportunities to go out and find community - whether it’s in nature, at an art event, or local business place. The town is alive with character.

The lighthouses anchor the scene, and act as a guiding light for boats navigating their way. All the same, the sunset, the beach, and natures magic is a sort of guiding light when we need it too. I know for myself, the sea is the first place I turn to when I need to clear my mind and find my way.

My favorite detail of this painting is the shoreline in the background. I really wanted to incorporate both lighthouses into “Light the Way”, and I loved working my way across the horizon to include the waves at Steamer Lane, the wharf, Dream Inn, and Boardwalk, all the way to the bluffs at Seabright beach. It was particularly fun to get these special details in after working on all the big elements - sky, sea, and the lighthouse. Hope you enjoy this zoomed in panorama! Where would you be hanging out here?

“Light the Way” captures our little Santa Cruz bubble, and all the action that happens between two lighthouses. Surfers cruising at the lane, wharf visitors watching sea lions and swooping up seafood, thrill seekers at the Boardwalk, as the swells roll in and the sky lights up the end of another fun day in paradise!

Here are some pics of the messy beginning and middle stages of my painting “Big Sur Pine”! The key things I wanted to capture were the turquoise shade of water, the fog bank in the distance, and of course, the grandeur of the scene.

Swipe through to see the original reference photo, too. I can’t even remember what year I took this photo off of the Vicente Flat trail, right in the heart of Big Sur.

I’ve held on to this image, waiting for the right time to paint it. It was perfect for my last series of coastal landscapes, and the large scale was ideal for getting immersed in this beautiful scene.

When I travel and explore, I often think about the color palette of a place. Big Sur, to me, has shades of turquoise, purple, gold, and green, all of which are prominent in this piece!

Introducing my painting “Big Sur Pine”, an ode to one of my favorite places! A grand view of the mountains cascading towards the sea, viewed from high up on the trail, as if you are a bird yourself. A lone pine anchors the scene, standing strong in the face of the elements.

This painting reminds me of all my wonderful memories of adventures over the years. My trips to Big Sur are always a reset. Going in flustered and anxious from city life and hustle. But after a few nights under the stars, I return home dirty, sweaty, so happy, and reinvigorated for whatever project is up next!

What thoughts come up for you when you see this painting?
