For you graduates out there!! Congratulations and enjoy this 80s cool image! He is proud of all your hard work! 😉 The best is yet to come.

I’ve never posted this handsome man. I had hoped to find the original. If anyone out there has this original acrylic ink on board for Pl***oy please reach out.

This couple was published in Pl***oy Magazine August 1981 in The Pl***oy Forum.

It’s also quite timely to post with the new movie release this month as our Covergirl was Valerie Perrine. Valerie starred as Eve Teschmacher in “Superman: The Movie” and “Superman Il” with Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman. She adorned this cover which was released just shortly after the United States release on June 19, 1981. “Superman: The Movie” is still one of my all-time favorite films. I still believe I can fly. Perrine sadly passed away in March after battling Parkinson’s disease.

Pl***oy Magazine Playmate of the Month was the beautiful Debbie Boostrom. (RIP)

So let me know … Any graduates out there?

Oh!! I have a beautiful Pl***oy male pencil in stock right now for all of you looking for a male drawing. Please inquire.

Yes, one more! This canvas displays a retro graphic “lightning” behind the model’s confident, seductive stare. The painting is 80s decorator friendly with a palette of gray, pink, and turquoise. Found in Nagel’s studio after he died, the work is one of the last canvases the artist would paint.

My friend Patrick Nagel Print & Art Collectors Information Resource previously discussed the similarities to the famous “Sushi Girl” image, “The pose, hair and straps match. Plus both images were created during the same narrow window of time. Also, there is a canvas version of the After Hours image that was found in Pat’s studio after his death.”

Starting bid is $25,000 with no bid yet…Why? It is most likely bidders are waiting to win “Polka Dot Dress” or “Close-up” in line first, but this canvas is gorgeous and really pops with the color alterations Nagel made. As I have some inside scoop, here is my recommendation: If you are a hopeful FIRST time canvas buyer and want to get in Nagel game, bid EARLY before the live auction as the increment bids heavily increase. This ONE might be a steal, simply because there are 3. The fact that it was one of the last in my opinion is a bonus. Really? Yes…

I personally own two unsigned boards that are LASTS and they are special. One was created for Pl***oy in February 1984 known as “Leather Cap”, never submitted to the magazine due to his untimely death, and the other is the LAST board ever published by Pl***oy prior to them re-printing images. Neither are signed, do I care? NOPE! Most of Nagel’s art sold out by the estate after Nagel’s passing was unsigned. It has not lowered values.

HA Description

Untitled, 1984
Acrylic on canvas
30 x 25 inches (76.2 x 63.5 cm)

This dynamic artwork is considered by many to be the last Patrick Nagel canvas ever created. The work was purchased directly from Mirage Editions in 1984 and is accompanied by Certificate of Authenticity stating the painting was in the studio of Patrick Nagel at the time of his death signed by Barry Haun, the artist’s studio assistant. A small acrylic-on-board variant of this image appeared in the February 1984 issue of Pl***oy.

Estimate: $50,000 - up. (Edit there are two bidders and it is now 27k) bid as of 4-18

HA Description:

Untitled (Close Up - Heidi Sorenson), 1983
Acrylic on canvas
48 x 40 inches (121.9 x 101.6 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: ©1983 Nagel

“Close Up” as it is known among Nagel collectors, features the popular model and actress Heidi Sorensen. After she appeared as Pl***oy’s July 1981 Playmate of the Month, an acrylic-on-board version of this image was published in the magazine’s “Pl***oy Advisor” advice column in November 1983.

Nagel was particularly fond of the composition and revisited the concept twice, creating two canvas versions-the present work being the largest. The current owner acquired this painting at Nagel’s celebrated 1983 exhibition at New York City’s Dyansen Gallery.

Estimate: $100,000 - up. Edited: Current bid is US $65,000 Buyer’s Premium $81,250!

My FAVORITE of the 3! 🤩🥰

As I mention in my article, “Close Up” is a masterful demonstration in Nagel portraiture following the massive impact of his 1982 Duran Duran “Rio” portrait. Nagel put himself on the map as the post-Warhol portraiture and celebrity artist on the West Coast with canvases of Dynasty’s Joan Collins, Blade Runner’s Joanna Cassidy, and ’80s “It Girl” Brooke Shields. Bornstein had plans for other celebrity portraits, too. In the foreword of 1985’s “The Art of Patrick Nagel,” Elena G. Millie, who was the curator of the poster collection at the Library of Congress at the time, noted that Nagel was scheduled to create a series of limited-edition silk-screen portraits of Mick Jagger.

“Close Up” hit closer to home for Nagel, featuring Pl***oy Playmate Heidi Sorenson, a favorite model of the artist. Nagel photographed and painted Sorenson repeatedly and would tell associates, “Heidi has the perfect nose.” Another important canvas featuring Sorenson — “Heidi” 1983 — resides in the collection of Duran Duran keyboardist Nick Rhodes.

(Yes, the beautiful image of Heidi in a one piece bathing suit lounging under a palm tree.🌴. I have the graphic for sale).
I’m obsessed with this canvas!!!!!!!!

Heritage Auction Description:

Untitled (Tracy Vaccaro in Polka Dot Dress), 1983
Acrylic on canvas
40-1/8 x 25-1/8 inches (101.9 x 63.8 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: ©1983Nagel

This outstanding example by Patrick Nagel showcases the crisp and bold lines, dramatic attitude, pop sensibility, and minimalist restraint that made him the most iconic artist of women of the 1980s. Employing an immediately recognizable palette that defined an entire era, this absolute knockout is one of the finest to ever appear at auction. The current owner purchased this artwork at New York City’s Dyansen Gallery in the 1983 exhibition and it has resided in the same collection for decades.

The canvas depicts Tracy Vaccaro, October 1983 Playmate of the Month in an iconic polka dot dress. Nagel’s canvases are extremely rare, and represent the artist’s most realized expressions of his own vision, thus the most desirable examples of his art for collectors, and they often were created to expand upon ideas he had worked out on board for commercial assignments. This present work became a popular calendar piece, and the board variant of this image was originally published in the December 1983 issue of Pl***oy. It also appears on page 115 of The Art of Patrick Nagel (St. James Press, 1985).

We would like to thank Monica Moynihan of Patrick Nagel Arts for her assistance in cataloging this lot.

(Yes, that’s me! Thanks for the shout out Heritage. Now that you’ve made it through this far on that post don’t forget to go to the link in my bio because that’s the gold!! )

HA Estimate: $150,000 - up. Current bid $90,000 ($112,500 with Buyer’s Premium)
