One Step Beyond While One Step Beyond is RIP, it's memory lives on and there just might be a Next Step Beyond one of these nights.

Sometimes in all the hectic times we had at One Step Beyond, I forgot how amazing it was that we brought such amazing bands to the South Bay and gave local bands like Bolero and Autumn Cathedral the showcase they deserved. Thanks Rene Peraza for sharing! Posting this to the One Step Beyond page today - which is the 35th anniversary of Bolero's record release show in what was a very full month of music at OSB... This Sunday will mark 35 years our band BOLERO would launch its sole record release at Stan Kent's One Step Beyond (Santa Clara, California | USA). It was a Friday and cover price was only $6! Look at the flyer's list of artists the club would typically have in a given month - wow! The band: René (vocals), Diego Cisternas, (keyboards, sounds & things), Jay Goudeau (Bass), Doug Shuster (guitar), and Dave Lovvorn (drums). The vinyl itself: 'Gypsy (Catch My Soul) / Better Than The Real Thing' - Recorded at Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco, and Produced by Steve Masters (Sir Arthur on the liner notes). Recording was mastered by the late-great George Horn at Fantasy Studios (Berkeley, CA).
As good an archivist as I am, I cannot recall who took these photos, so THANK YOU! It's the last thing we ever thought about so they are treasured!

I couldn't resist, on this auspicious, historic day, sharing this video featuring Classix Nouveaux. Almost sounds like the Orange Face's speech outside the court. Maybe he'll start using Sal Solo's serenade at his campaign rallies... I doubt we'll see Orange Face in an Orange Jumpsuit 80's dancing to this song but stranger things have happened in these weird times... take it away Sal...

When we were in the thick of the daily drama of keeping a nightclub running we didn't have time to think of the future and the club's legacy. With reunions it has sunk in how influential OSB was in so many lives. No better example than this young gentleman wearing the OSB shirt from the reunion. His mom Denise and dad Ron met at OSB when Ron was working security and loading in bands and are celebrating their anniversary this month. The club might be gone but the memories are living and perhaps that's how it should be. I'm very gratified to have been a catalyst in Ron and Denise's great love adventure. Happy Anniversary and keep the music playing loud!

Every month in Los Angeles I DJ Lost Angels and for our Halloween show - Rise of the Wraiths we featured some fantastic special performances and this surprise guest captivated the audience with an acoustic show that was a beautifu stark contrast the loud pumping tracks I was spinning. It worked magically. Everyone from the One Step Beyond daze will recognize him from his still legendary performances with a band on our stage. It's J.P. Aston and here's a snippet of an appropriately dark song in the dark of Lost Angels - you can't see much but the sound is scarily good ... and if you want to see and hear more there are rumors of him visiting the Bay Area for some shows ... perhaps even an OSB reunion?

The idea to open One Step Beyond actually grew out of visits I made in 1973 and 74 to Rodney Bingenheimer's English Discotheque in LA. As a student I didn't really have the means or time or connections to do it but I never lost sight of that dream and some 12 years later One Step Beyond was born modelled very much on the Rodney ethos or music and fashion where the audience becomes the stars of the night. It was a great honor a few years after opening that Rodney flew up to see Nina Hagen play - and now - all these years later I go to go back to Rodney's English Discotheque in it's original location on Sunset Blvd and say thanks to the man again for the music he plays and the inspiration he gives. Roq on Rodney on the Roq!

OK, it wasn't a real night club, only an art installation, but the second installment of LTD L.A. Art Gallery's exhibit/re-creation of Rodney Bingenheimer's famed '70s glam rock hangout Rodney's English Disco sure felt like a real hot spot. Housed in the same spot as the club in the '70s, the galler…

For those of you that are in Southern California this coming Friday it promises to be a stroll down One Step Beyond memory lane. I'll be co-hosting the Lost 80s live night at House of Blues Anaheim - but it's no ordinary (as if there ever is an ordinary night where these bands are concerned) night as you'll read from the article below. The man behind the Lost 80s nights - Rob Juarez - is celebrating his 10th anniversary of producing, creating, booking and starring in these shows - and he got his start in this business from his days and nights at One Step Beyond taking photos of the bands and helping us out of some dire emergencies - so come to the HoB in Anaheim on Friday night and you'll hear some of those tales and of course the fabulous line-up of bands - many that graced the One Step stage - and celebrate Rob and all that great music he's kept alive.

Redondo Beach's Rob Juarez spent the 1980s immersed in New Wave and other popular music. Nearly 30 years after attending Redondo Union High School, he's bringing those moments in music history back to the fans and exposing it to another generation with his Lost 80's Live concert tour, which celebrat…

Here's something very cool - sent in by long time regular Eric Spinale from this weekend's San Francisco Chronicle Style section. It's a profile of legendary fashion icon, designer and club kid Richie Rich. Read down the article and you'll see he credits One Step Beyond with being his inspiration where he and his friends spent hours getting dressed up and putting on make-up. You read something like this and it makes you realize that all the hard work and tough times make One Step Beyond exist and work was worth it. Quite coincidentally I was up in San Francisco this weekend and happened to see the article in person. Quite a pleasant shock to be thumbing through the pages of the Sunday paper and get such a cool blast from the past surprise.

So does anyone have any memorabilia from when Peter Murphy played One Step Beyond? Picture? Flyer/ Set-list? If so post it and I'll get it signed and returned. Unique opportunity coming up and thought it might be fun to share.

It is really cool when we get a chance to say if One Step Beyond was still around this band would be playing there - and the latest sounds to catch my interest in that vein come from Brain Dead Symphony - getting good response on the floor to the tracks which mix well with Erasure. Take a listen and if you like please "like" this page : https://www.facebook.com/BrainDeadSymphony

And who knows - maybe you'll be seeing them at a One Step Beyond Next Step beyond night soon...

Finally!! An up and coming/rising powerful new sound/duo recording artist called Brain Dead Symphony releases its debut EP titled “Victory.” This EP is available now on digital distribution including, iTunes Worldwide, Rhapsody, Amazon, Google Play, Spotify, Bandcamp, and others with three (3) radi...
