What if one of Bollywood’s most intriguing conversations never made it to print?

In the 1970s and 80s, Shobhaa De helped give Stardust its unmistakable voice: irreverent, provocative and far less deferential to film stars than the magazines that came before it. De has described the magazine’s approach as deliberately bold, and her years covering Bollywood gave her a front-row view of the industry behind the carefully constructed screen personas.

And few personas fascinated her quite like Rekha. De witnessed Rekha’s extraordinary transformation from an unconventional young newcomer into one of Hindi cinema’s most enigmatic stars.

In Naatak’s BOMBAY TALKIES 2, we imagine the interview we wish existed, Shobhaa De and Rekha, face to face, with the questions, wit, tension and candor that might have filled the pages of Stardust… but never did.

Before Lagaan. Before Dil Chahta Hai. Before Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par and 3 Idiots… there was “Papa Kehte Hain.”

When Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak released in 1988, Aamir Khan went from an unfamiliar young actor to a national heartthrob almost overnight. And “Papa Kehte Hain” became inseparable from that arrival, a song about a young man standing at the edge of adulthood, wondering what the future might hold.

The answer, as it turned out, was extraordinary.

Naatak, which creates theater by, for and about South Asians, somehow seems to make each new musical its biggest show yet. “Bombay Talkies 2,” which surveys the Indian film industry from the 1960s through ’90s, features more than 50 songs, complete with live music and dance. Written and directed by the astonishingly prolific Sujit Saraf, the show centers on a clapper boy — the low-level worker who strikes the clapperboard labeling scenes and takes before each shout of “Action!” — as he toils away as a jack-of-all-trades and hobnobbing with stars in the real-life trailblazing Indian film studio of the same name.
