“Martin Mull’s surreal and haunting images have a simmering—sometimes even sinister—tension and feel oddly resonant in this moment.”— Ann Philbin, Director Emerita of the Hammer Museum and co-curator of “Martin Mull: The Joys of Indoor/Outdoor Living.”

Best known for roles in Clue, Roseanne, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Martin Mull also left behind a significant body of work as a serious painter. Opening at SBMA in June 2027, this exhibition brings together more than 50 rarely seen paintings from private collections.

Co-Curated by Ann Philbin and Steve Martin, who knew Mull for more than 50 years and closely followed his parallel career as an artist, the exhibition is presented in close collaboration with James Glisson, SBMA's Chief Curator.

📆 June 27 – October 17, 2027, at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art

📚 The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue featuring texts by Steve Martin, Dave Hickey, James Glisson, and additional contributors. Designed by Purtill Family Business and published by DelMonico Books, the catalogue will be released in June 2027.

Big and exciting news from the Santa Barbara Museum of Art: The exhibition “Martin Mull: The Joys of Indoor/Outdoor Living” is coming in June 2027 as the centerpiece of the Museum's summer 2027 program 🖼️

"For many, this will be a surprising introduction to an iconic actor's painting practice. Conceived and co-curated by Ann Philbin and Mull's long-time friend and enthusiast Steve Martin, the exhibition continues SBMA's legacy as a place of discovery and the unexpected," said Amada Cruz, Eichholz Foundation Director and CEO of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. The show is organized in close collaboration with SBMA Chief Curator James Glisson.

🏠Set against the newly built suburbs of the 1950s and '60s, his paintings undercut the era's consumerism and homogeneity, depicting the tension and darkness lurking beneath the prosperity of postwar America.

“Before trends, there were elements. Before style, there was spirit. Water that carries memory, air that breathes life, fire that fuels transformation, earth that grounds our being. In every color, a story. In every step, a legacy. Through every look, we invite you into the world.”

On May 23, is back on SBMA’s front steps with another stunning fashion show. 💫 Student designers each chose an element that spoke to them — water, air, fire, or earth — and brought it to life through their own personal and cultural lens. The finale looks are inspired by works from As if in a Dream: History, Fantasy, Future.
