Final days to see “Remixed: Entwined Histories & New Forms.” ✨

Closing August 30, “Remixed” brings together artists who transform familiar materials, traditions and histories into something entirely new.

Like a musical remix, the works on view layer past and present—reimagining textiles, pigments, film, found materials and inherited traditions to explore memory, identity, history and change.

If you haven’t experienced it yet, now’s the time. Visit SBMA before “Remixed” leaves the galleries on August 30.

This July, award-winning actor Jane Lynch joined esteemed astrological psychologist Dr. Jennifer Freed for a thought-provoking conversation exploring the connection between creativity, the cosmos and the human experience.

Drawing on psychology, history and personal insight, they reflected on how astrology has inspired artists across centuries—and how creativity invites us to imagine not just what is, but what could be.

✨Summer Dance on the Steps: As if in a Dream

Join us this Sunday as Santa Barbara Dance Theater, led by Artistic Director Brandon Whited, transforms the museum's Front Terrace into a living stage.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the company presents a series of performances inspired by As if in a Dream: History, Fantasy, and Future.

Created in collaboration with the UCSB Department of Theater & Dance, this one-of-a-kind performance invites you to experience the exhibition through dance.

Join Wilson at SBMA on Sunday for a performance of his viral essay “It’s Not What the World Needs Right Now,” published in in 2024. Featuring new stories and video, the artist has much to say about an industry that pays in clout and almost never in cash.

This Sunday, don't miss Breathing Room: Gathering Stars by , happening right on SBMA's front steps. 🌟

Created as a special commission for the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, this site-responsive performance unfolds in three movements across the Museum's staircase and arched façade, interweaving dance, breath, and gesture.

This Sunday, the Museum is free for residents of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura Counties, so come early and catch Shinique Smith's work in Remixed: Entwined Histories & New Forms before the performance. 🎨

"In the arts, as in life, everything is possible provided it is based on love." — Marc Chagall

🎂Today, we celebrate Marc Chagall, born on this day, July 6, in 1887 in Lyozna, Russian Empire (now Belarus). Chagall became one of the defining voices of 20th-century modernism, working across painting, printmaking, stained glass, and stage design.

🎨 His life was as layered as his work, shaped by Jewish heritage, revolution, war, exile, and love, moving from St. Petersburg to Berlin, Paris, and New York before settling in Vence, France, in 1950.

We have several of his works in our permanent collection, but this one, Jeune fille en marche (ca. 1927–1928), is currently on view. Have you seen it? Tell us how it makes you feel. 👇
