Santa Barbara Dance Theater is the University of California, Santa Barbara's resident professional dance company in the Department of Theater and Dance. Founded in 1976 and directed by Alice Condodina (former soloist with the José Limón Dance Company) until 1990 as Repertory-West Dance Company. Directed by Jerry Pearson 1991-2011. Directed by Christopher Pilafian 2011-2020, and Brandon Whited 2021

-present, the company creates, commissions, reconstructs and performs new and heritage works of contemporary dance by faculty, emerging or established guest artists and past leaders the field. Look out for SBDT's return to the stage January 13-16, 2022 -- breaking out of the covid-imposed hiatus.
