As summer winds down, so does Cosas de la Vida: The Things of Life, featuring the paintings of Pedro De La Cruz and Olivia Joffrey. And with temperatures heating up, we’re keeping things cool at Art & Soul—the AC is cranking, the wine is chilled, and 1323 State Street is the perfect place to escape the heat.

For the past six weeks, the gallery has been filled with color, observation, and the familiar complexities of everyday life. Presented during Fiesta season, this exhibition has felt especially at home here—celebrating California, culture and community while finding beauty and meaning in the things that connect us.

Join us this Sunday, August 30th from 3–5pm with Pedro and Olivia, a chilled glass of wine, and a final afternoon with Cosas de la Vida. If there’s a piece you’ve been thinking about—or one you haven’t yet discovered—come for one last look at how much we share in these things of life.

In COLORS OF THE COAST, Santa Barbara artist Sylvan Butera Rich explores the California coast through memory, intuition, and color, blending the recognizable beauty of the natural world with the fluidity of an internal landscape in her latest body of work.

In COSAS DE LA VIDA, these intimate works offer a timely counterpoint to the exhibition’s more expansive narratives, reminding us that the simplest possessions can hold a lifetime of meaning. And what could be more quintessentially Californian than our hats!

The Santa Barbara Summit for Tibet, Santa Barbara Friends of Tibet, and Art & Soul are honored to invite you to witness the creation of a traditional sacred sand mandala, under way now at the gallery, 1323 State Street, hosted by Thepo Tulku and monks from Namgyal Monastery, the personal monastery of His Holiness the Dali Lama.

Stop by today through Saturday 10-5pm to learn about the rich history and symbolism behind the mandala, and learn how to use the traditional metal funnels, chak-pur, to apply the vibrant sand yourself!

Join us on Sunday morning for the final viewing of the completed sand mandala, followed by a traditional Dissolution Ceremony. At 12pm, Tibetan and Thai monks, alongside local interfaith leaders and community members, will lead a collective Walk for Peace to the Santa Barbara Pier.

All are welcome to attend, observe, and participate. Join us for a weekend of mindfulness, community, and global harmony!

One of our favorite parts of every exhibition is our Conversations with Artists series. The stores behind the artists and their art are so inspiring and add such an important dimension to their work. We ask a lot of our artists - it’s not enough to bare your soul and your passion on the walls - we want you to answer all our questions - from what color white you prefer to what message you hope you share through your art. We are always so grateful and honored when our artists take the time to chat with us.
