My latest nativity aquisition arrived in today’s mail, purchased from Etsy. These figures, all under 2 3/4” are made from the inner individual Tagua nuts from Columbia, that are crowded in an outer shell, much like a pomegranate, but much larger. When the outer shell is opened the inner, lighter portion of each nut is the texture of thick jello that hardens the longer it is exposed to air, during which time various shapes can be carved from it and this brown, outer peeling can be crafted into various designs to enhance the figure being created. This inner “jello”, when harden can be made into many useful items such as buttons for clothes, eating utensils & much more.
For this nativity set, lighter color inner parts were cut/shaped to be halos for Mary & Baby Jesus, gifts from the Magi, ears & horns for the animals, Joseph’s crook-staff, Mary’s head covering, and even the Christ Child himself at 3/4” long!

I recently taught a small class on making nativity ornaments using peanuts as Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus. The group did great creating their individual ornaments. Finding the members of the Holy Family in a bag of peanuts takes time….. there are lots of village folks in the bag!! Then there’s the tedious work of getting the faces carefully revealed without an “ooops” than sends you back to the peanut bag for a holy replacement! I think my class did well!!

Nativity of the day: Small but beautiful lead crystal figures. Arch was open, but the front of a notecard from a papercrafting friend added the perfect scene of the buildings of Bethlehem in the background. Keep your eyes open for the little things to add to enhance your nativities.

Nativity of the Day: Love the bright island colors and the dark skins portraying the culture of Jamaica. This was my daughter’s “last-day-of-Jamaican-vacation-FIND” to add to my collection of nativity crosses.... and from a country I did not have! Thank you, Miriam Klein!

NATIVITY OF THE DAY:
This traditional set in creamy white from Mexico recently jumped off the shelf, and fortunately landed on the carpet, breaking arms off one wiseman, scruffing the knuckles of Joseph’s left hand, and putting the stable into 4 pieces with breaks at the corners. Arms reattached easily & cleanly but stable needed more TLC & a clever coverup. Moss and fungus did the trick & almost look like flowers. I like the new look!

NATIVITY OF THE DAY:
A good eye & a little imagination is all it takes. Nativity “parts” can be found almost anywhere!! Even along the path at Robert Redford’s Sundance in Utah!! (Wisemen on left, shepherd & 2 rock sheep on right, & Holy Family in center.... in case your imagination was a little under par today). Designed by Michele Devitt, UD, Dayton, Ohio.

NATIVITY OF THE DAY:
A fragile eggshell, hand painted in this beautiful, stained glass look, was accidentally & unfortunately landed on a wood stable instead of the padded carpet that would have protected it. The main area of the design broke into many pieces and the challenge to put it back together touched my heart. Time, patience & a steady hand restored the broken pieces (as many as could be recovered). Then it reminded me that this is what God does. He creates a perfect man, but that man/woman eventually becomes cracked & broken with a piece or two missing, yet in His Time & with His Grace & Mercy & tender Love, He restores us!!! Not to perfection, but letting perhaps a small hole & a few cracks still exposed as a reminder & a visible witness to others of our Awesome God!!
