We’re still celebrating arthropods at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium! 🦐

Speaking of, mantis shrimp are truly incredible. The California mantis shrimp can strike at around 22 miles per hour, while some other species can clock strikes approaching 50 miles per hour!

Their unique vision is inspiring some pretty incredible technology, too. Scientists have developed a camera inspired by mantis shrimp vision that can capture ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared light on a single chip. In recent testing, this new technology identified cancerous lymph nodes with 97% sensitivity.

Come visit our mantis shrimp in the Exhibit Hall this Awesome Arthropod Week!

It’s Awesome Arthropod Week, and we’re officially arthropod-maxxing at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium! 🦀🦋🦐🕷️

Arthropods make up the largest animal phylum on Earth, accounting for more than 80% of all known animal species. From crabs and shrimp to butterflies, bees, and spiders, these incredible invertebrates all share segmented bodies, a hard exoskeleton, and jointed legs.

Celebrate with us this week by stopping by our special arthropod table in the Exhibit Hall from 2–5 p.m., where you can discover what makes these animals so remarkable.

Then, explore our Gift Shop Shop Cabrillo in person or online to find arthropod-themed gifts featuring everything from honeybees and butterflies to some of our favorite marine invertebrates.

Because arthropods are pretty awesome.

Watch until the end to find out how many seahorse babies our bonded pair recently welcomed! 👀

Male seahorses can give birth to anywhere from a few dozen to as many as 2,000 babies (called fry) in a single delivery.

One reason seahorses have such large broods is that very few babies survive to adulthood in the wild. Born smaller than your fingertip, these tiny fry are incredibly vulnerable, with fewer than 1% surviving to adulthood.

However, here at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, our team has successfully raised thousands of Pacific seahorses over the past year. Some are now on exhibit in our Aquarium, while many others have been shared with aquariums and conservation partners to support this vulnerable species.

Stop by our Aquatic Nursery to meet some of our newest little arrivals!

📸 Shoutout Aquarist Terah for helping produce this video!

How many babies did our seahorse dad pop out this month? 👀🌊🐴

Drop your best guess in the comments! We’ll reveal the answer, along with our staff’s guesses, later this week.

Hint: Our Pacific seahorse pair have welcomed thousands of babies over the past year, many of which have been shared with aquariums and conservation partners. Because Pacific seahorses are vulnerable to extinction, every successful birth helps support the future of this incredible species.

Looking up in the palm trees around Cabrillo Marine Aquarium you might spot an entirely unexpected creature: a great horned owl! 🦉

Earlier this year, a pair of owls welcomed three chicks near Cabrillo. As these owls do not build their own nests, the offshoots from a palm tree created a perfect place for the parents to raise a chick.

This week, we spotted one of the juveniles, all grown up! Come see if you can spot them hanging around Cabrillo!🦉🤎🥹
