MotherShip Studios is thrilled to announce the official revival of the celebrated Artist Series, a collaborative partnership with Thirsty Planet Brewing Company, recently relocated to San Marcos. Originally conceived with former arts non-profit, Big Medium, for the Austin Studio Tour, the newly reimagined program will make its return during the upcoming San Marcos Studio Tour in April ‘27.
All artists within 50 miles of the Thirsty Planet Brewery are encouraged to apply.
The Artist Series bridges the gap between craft brewing and the contemporary art community by selecting a featured regional artist to design a custom, limited-edition beer flavor concept and uniquely designed label art. By transitioning the program to the San Marcos Studio Tour, MotherShip Studios aims to spotlight the rapidly expanding, dynamic creative ecosystem of the greater San Marcos Area arts community.
Known in the Austin arts community for generating iconic, collector-item releases such as Ali R. Jackson’s Neon Rattlesnake and Dave McClinton’s Dark Matters, the revived series will provide a fresh platform for a new generation of creators. The custom collaborative brew will be served at featured hot spots throughout the April tour and will be available for purchase at select local retail partners.
"We are incredibly proud to bring this platforming initiative back to life in a way that centers the unique identity of the San Marcos area," says MotherShip Director Jacqueline Overby. "Partnering with Thirsty Planet allows us to continue to expand our offerings to the regional arts community, expanding the experience for San Marcos Studio Tour attendees, merging craft, collaboration, and visual arts excellence."

Join us this Saturday for the last chance to see our current exhibition, So the Story Goes. We will be hosting a Group Float Trip earlier in the day at 2pm. We will be meeting at Lion's Club to embark from there before ending the evening at the gallery.

In So the Story Goes, storytelling is not a linear act but a recursive one, an orbit around truths that resist direct articulation. The works assembled here mobilize humor, folklore, painterly tradition, and participatory play as strategies to destabilize inherited narratives and reconstitute them through personal and collective memory.
Curator, Jenn Wilson Shepherd, extends this participatory ethos into the exhibition space itself. By inviting audiences to inscribe their own stories directly onto the walls of Mothership, she asks the audience to transform the site into a living archive. This gesture foregrounds the voices of an emergent artistic community in San Marcos, collapsing the boundary between artist, curator, and audience, and positioning storytelling as a collective, evolving process.
