I’ve told this story s hundred times and people just don’t get it in their head. Even the recent Stax Records documentary got it wrong. Diane’s uncle Lewie Steinberg was the original bass player for Booker T and the MGs and co-wrote and played on Green Onions. Thank heavens someone recorded Steve Cropper here telling the real story before he passed. The only thing he left out here is that Lewie wanted to call the song “Funky Onions” but Jim Stuart and Mrs Axton wouldn’t go for it, “funk” was considered a vulgar word back in 1962.
