This anthem by American composer Alice Parker echoes God's universal mercy; although humanity approaches God in weakness and sin, God opens his house to all who seek him in faith and grants forgiveness, grace and redemption.

From deep distress and troubled thoughts
To Thee, my God, I raised my cries;
If Thou severely mark our faults,
No flesh can stand before Thine eyes.

But Thou has built Thy throne of grace
Free to dispense Thy pardons there,
That sinners may approach Thy face,
And hope and love, as well as fear.

Great is His love, and large His grace,
Through the redemption of His Son;
He turns our feet from sinful ways,
And pardons what our hands have done.

Bernard of Clairvaux's mystic poem - O Jesus, Joy of Loving Hearts, unites the theme of today's reading's; encountering Christ's presence amid fear, longing, and uncertainty and finding lasting peace and joy in him alone.

O Jesus, joy of loving hearts,
the fount of life, and our true light,
we seek the peace your love imparts,
and stand rejoicing in your sight.

O Jesus, ever with us stay,
make all our moments calm and bright;
O chase the night of sin away;
shed o'er the world your holy light.

We taste in you our living Bread,
and long to feast upon you still;
we drink of you, the fountain-head,
our thirsting souls to quench and fill.

For you our restless spirits yearn
where'er our changing lot is cast;

Zebulon Highben's The Lord Shall Come and Not Be Slow describes Christ as the fulfillment of God's promise to satisfy humanity's deepest hunger - both physical and spiritual; moving from expectant waiting to joyful fulfillment.

The Lord shall come and not be slow;
his light is soon appearing.
Prepare, you children here below
who are these tidings hearing:

Arise, O sleepers, trim your lamps!
Their flames, so swiftly burning,
reveal the path to hope and peace -
the dawn for which you're yearning.
