Womanhood

Womanhood In 2018, County of Santa Clara County Supervisors began a conversation about how women are represented in public spaces.

Womanhood is an arts-centered public recognition project that will explore ways to honor the contributions of all women across all intersectional identities to the region and beyond. In 2020, the Office of Women's Policy launched an effort, entitled Womanhood, that will explore ways to honor the historic contributions of women across all intersectional identities to this region and acknowledge tha

t this region was originally occupied by the Ohlone and Muwekma Ohlone people. Womanhood is an arts-centered public recognition project that launches this year during Women’s History Month. As we celebrate the second century of Women’s Suffrage in the United States, Womanhood will commission countywide artist-designed-projects and places, in partnership with cultural arts & community organizations and businesses. Santa Clara County’s women have many stories to tell; in all fields both humble and celebrated. Until now, as Virginia Woolf said, “For most of history, Anonymous was a woman”. Today we are telling women’s stories to remember their impact on womanhood. Stories for, by, and about women across all intersectional identities including BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), women of color, LGBTQ+ women, transgender and nonbinary identities, women who express and feel freely and fluidly, and women across all diverse languages, abilities, status, and immigration backgrounds. Starting in March 2021 we are starting the conversation by asking:

- Who should we recognize in public spaces?
- What is public space?
- How should we recognize women in our public spaces?
- Where should we recognize them? Follow us for more updates on Womanhood from community engagement events, artist talks, artist calls, news, and more! Subscribe to our newsletter:

Another amazing article and an exciting project announcement!

Our team has been steadily and diligently working towards an exciting new project announcement and are super grateful for the awesome write-up by Sal Pizarro! 🥰

Through Womanhood, we have had the opportunity to collaborate with amazing artists in honoring women and their contributions to this region though the creation of public artworks that were translated into outdoor banners along paseos and corridors, that brought life into empty window storefronts and historic buildings, featured as mini-docs, and more. Now we're adding augmented reality up our sleeves!

For 2025, we are launching a countywide series of 20 augmented reality (AR) artwork “monuments” entitled Journey through Womanhood. The 20 AR artworks are the beginning of a 100-monument project that will be placed in locations throughout the County.

Featuring...

⭐Kathy Aoki , honoring the Women in Social Justice and Community Leadership

⭐Arlene Biala with Jayann Bella and Frances Mendoza, honoring Women in Arts and Culture

⭐Kiana Honarmand, honoring Women in Technology

⭐Pantea Karimi honoring Women in Space and Science

⭐Elba Raquel Martinez honoring Women in Sports

Buckle up, turn on your notifications, and follow along to view the behind-the-scenes with our project and artists, get updated on location unveilings, meet our community partners, and RSVP to our culminating roll-out of our monument unveilings and events.

We're going to take you on a Journey Through Womanhood!

Did you miss us? It's been quiet here on our social media, but we've been putting in the work behind the scenes and are excited pick back up and start off 2024 with some exciting project announcements and reveals. Let's catch up!

Last year, we received an Abierto grant from the City of San Jose to create temporary public artworks to celebrate immigrant women in Santa Clara County. To help honor and tell those stories through art, Womanhood commissioned ESSJ artist-in-residence to design a series of 12 outdoor banners. Ruby and Womanhood tabled at Women's Heritage Day 2023 to gather feedback and inspiration from community members on how immigrant women should be celebrated through art in Santa Clara County. We're excited to return to Women's Heritage Day at History Park this Saturday, March 9, 2024 from Noon - 3:30PM with a pop-up gallery displaying the beautiful illustrations as well as a coloring station with coloring sheets of Ruby's artwork for guests to enjoy! Come and meet the artist, view and learn about her artwork, color with us, and grab some of our new Womanhood stickers designed by the artist!

Can't make it? Ruby's artwork is also on display as outdoor banners along Alum Rock Avenue between Sunset Ave and 34th St. a coloring activity with coloring sheets of the Ruby's artwork for guests to enjoy!
