More than half a century after changing the course of rock music, Roger Daltrey is making a bold claim about his band's legacy: according to the legendary frontman, The Who were the original heavy metal band.

Speaking in a new interview with Rolling Stone, Daltrey argued that many of the elements later associated with heavy metal — towering amplification, aggressive stage performances, instrument destruction and sheer sonic power — were already part of The Who’s DNA years before the genre officially existed.

“We were just different than everybody else,” Daltrey said, suggesting that modern audiences often overlook how radical The Who sounded during the mid-1960s.

The rumors became so widespread that family sources stepped in directly to shut them down. According to TMZ, people close to Gibb confirmed the 79-year-old singer is “healthy, happy, and living life” at his home near Miami, dismissing the viral posts as completely fabricated.

The fake reports appear to have exploded Sunday (May 24), when a page titled “R.I.P Barry Gibb” suddenly gained traction online and reportedly collected close to one million likes before eventually being removed.

But by that point, the misinformation had already escaped containment. Across X, Facebook and TikTok, users continued reposting claims that Gibb had died, while AI-generated tribute images and fake memorial graphics flooded timelines — another example of how generative AI is accelerating celebrity misinformation online.
