When a wildfire forces an evacuation, people aren’t the only ones who need a way out.

Horses and household pets need a plan, too.
During Orange County’s Norte Fire, the volunteer-based Orange County Animal Rescue Team (OCART) prepared to help move large animals if needed. The Orange County Register reported that about 180 of OCART’s 250 volunteers were ready for possible deployment, with horse trailers and shelter support.

The report also described preparations for roughly 300 temporary horse stalls. These were standby preparations—not a claim that every volunteer was deployed or that those horses were rescued. Orange County Register
OC Animal Care also posted guidance for pets and large-animal evacuations. During the response, it listed 714-935-6848 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 714-259-1122 from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. for evacuation information. The County Sheriff’s Office reported that all Norte Fire evacuation orders had been lifted by Oct. 17, while warning that the burn scar remained hazardous and closed. The city hall was heavily damaged by fire on Oct. 17, amid violence following a cost-of-living protest. AFP reported that masked protesters were seen breaking into the building and setting a fire. They didn’t tell Kevan to stay home. They found a way to carry him with them.

Kevan Chandler lives with spinal muscular atrophy, a rare neuromuscular condition that affects his mobility. But when he dreamed of exploring Europe, his friends refused to let a wheelchair—or the inaccessible places along the way—define what was possible.

In 2016, Kevan and six close friends left his wheelchair behind and traveled across Europe for three weeks. Using a modified hiking backpack, his friends took turns carrying him through France, England, and Ireland.

Together, they reached places that would have been difficult or impossible to access by wheelchair.

But this story is about more than one incredible trip.

It is about friendship that turns obstacles into solutions. It is about people who do not simply say, “That cannot be done”—but ask, “How can we make it possible?”

Kevan later founded We Carry Kevan, an organization created to help more families facing mobility challenges experience travel, connection, and adventure with the people they love.

One backpack helped Kevan see more of the world.

But the bigger message traveled even farther:

**Accessibility is not charity. Inclusion is creating a way for everyone to be part of the journey.**

His friends did not carry him because they saw him as helpless.

They carried him because he was their friend—and because everyone deserves the chance to explore the world.

California is facing another frightening wildfire emergency.

As flames spread through parts of Southern California, families are being told to prepare, leave, or remain ready to evacuate. Roads and neighborhoods are filling with smoke while firefighters work in dangerous winds and intense heat to protect homes and communities.

Behind every evacuation warning is a family worried about their home, their pets, and the people they love. Behind every fire line are firefighters, emergency crews, pilots, law enforcement officers, and volunteers putting their own safety at risk for others.

She shared joyful selfies and made it clear that cruel comments would not decide whether she was allowed to be visible.
Born with Freeman-Sheldon syndrome, Melissa has spent her life navigating a rare condition that affects her muscles, joints, and facial features. She has undergone more than 26 surgeries, yet she continues to write, speak, advocate, and challenge the way society talks about disability.

For some people, an unpaid debt can become the barrier between prison and home.

Since 2008, Dubai businessman and philanthropist Firoz Merchant has supported debt-relief efforts for inmates across the UAE.

A Khaleej Times report published on February 20, 2026, said the initiative had helped more than 20,000 inmates secure release.

In 2025, 2,972 people from more than 50 nationalities were released across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah, with AED 2.4 million contributed toward clearing their debts.

At the time of that February 20 report, another 497 releases had been recorded so far in 2026. In many cases, airfare home was also covered.
Merchant has described many of those helped as people facing financial hardship, saying, “These are not hardened criminals. Most are victims of circumstance.” The support also extended beyond prison releases: in 2025, he contributed AED 1 million through Dubai Charity Association toward dialysis and other medical expenses for 11 patients.

He summed up the work simply: “If someone returns home to their family because a debt was cleared, that is enough.”
