THE PRICE OF CONSOLE GAMING IS CLIMBING — BUT U.S. SALES ARE MOVING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION! 🎮📉
Xbox and PlayStation are both facing a major hardware slowdown, and the latest Circana figures reveal just how much the U.S. market has changed.
📊 HERE’S WHAT THE NUMBERS SHOW:
🔴 XBOX: Hardware unit sales fell 33% year over year through August 2026, marking the platform’s lowest year-to-date level on record in the U.S.
🔵 PLAYSTATION: Hardware unit sales dropped 25%, reaching their lowest year-to-date level since 2013.
💰 The average price paid for an Xbox console climbed to $529, up 26% from last year. PlayStation’s average reached $597, an increase of 20%. Both figures set new U.S. records.
Industry analyst Mat Piscatella says growing price sensitivity is becoming a serious challenge for the hardware market.
The big question now is whether players are becoming less willing to pay premium prices for new consoles — and what it will take to bring more buyers back.
⚠️ While the sales declines and price figures are supported by Circana data, higher prices have not been proven to be the sole cause.
