Fuchsia Dance invites you to an interactive Kathakali lecture demonstration and workshop presented by esteemed artists from Kerala: Sri. Kalamandalam Manoj, Sri. Kaladharan Viswanath, and Smt. Roshni Pillai.

Kathakali (Katha: “story/conversation”, Kali: “performance/play”) is one of the major Indian classical dance forms, hailing from the southwestern state of Kerala. You may recognize it by its vibrant costumes and makeup, but there is profound depth and tradition to this art. This event presents a rare chance for you to learn, delve deeper and interact with professionals of this art form.

Saturday, November 4
2:30pm - 4:30pm

And the stories came alive…

It was the perfect evening. A room that we decorated with our moms’ saris, an audience where we recognized everyone’s faces, the nataraja from our practice room blessing us, dances we shared from our hearts to yours, and the most gorgeous sunset to accompany the time we spent snacking on samosas together after :)

And the best part, together we collected so many books for Children’s Book Project, to help more kids discover more stories!

Thank you for making Mālika such a success!

Inviting you to Mālika, a duet recital by Smrithi and Sanjana! Our performance is in partnership with Children's Book Project, a nonprofit dedicated to providing books to children in under-resourced neighborhoods. In lieu of a ticket, please bring your favorite children's book(s) to donate to the book drive.

A note from Smrithi…
This summer has been a learning experience for Sanjana and I. Working a 9-5 lab internship plus practicing for this performance everyday has been an incredible test of patience and dedication for both of us. I learned consistency over time is so much harder than it seems but is required if we want to pursue dance alongside our careers. The margam pushed us to practice the way we used to for our arangetrams 6 years ago and has reminded us that there’s always so much to improve.

We hope this margam gives us an opportunity to reconnect with you, our family and friends, before both of us go to college. Hope to see you there!

A note from Sanjana…
Smrithi and I haven’t performed a margam since 2018 and all our performances since then have been much shorter in length and intensity. We’ve done choreographies where we push the creative bounds of Bharatanatyam, so coming back to a traditional margam format was really nostalgic. Margams are popularly solos, but there is something so special about dancing alongside others. In moments of physical exhaustion, making eye contact is just what you need to keep going. We spend so much time so deeply connected through our movements, yet not a single word is exchanged while we dance.

We would be so honored to see you at our performance, and share our love for dance with our community. Thank you for always supporting us!

Swipe for a throwback! 👉

We are so excited to be performing at this Saturday, presenting a jathiswaram we choreographed together! Ticket link in bio, hope to see you there 💓

A little bit about us: we met at UC Berkeley and danced together on .berkeley during undergrad. We absolutely fell in love with group choreography and competing together in college was a completely new experience for us.
Fun fact: we were Natya captains together during the 21-22 season!

Janhavi and Krishna graduated in 2022 and Sanjana in 2023 and now we are so excited to continue dancing together post grad too. We’ve performed traditional pieces as well as original group productions and can’t wait to meet many more dancers like us through Fuchsia🌸
