The curtain falls on an era.

With profound sadness, we honor the life and enduring legacy of Adela Clara (October 21, 1932 – May 4, 2026), dancer, visionary, and founder of Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco, whose artistry and determination helped establish flamenco as a living art form in the US.

In 1966, Adela built something few believed possible: a permanent home for flamenco in the US. Alongside Miguel Santos, and through the continued leadership of current Artistic Director Carola Zertuche, what began as her artistic dream became a living legacy — a company, a community, and a movement that transformed generations of dancers and audiences. Through every performance, rehearsal, costume, rhythm, and silence, her spirit shaped who we are.

To many, she was maestra.
To us, she was the foundation.

As Theatre Flamenco of San Francisco moves toward its 60th year, we carry forward her fire with immense gratitude and responsibility. Every step we take onstage is possible because she first dared to take one.

Thank you, Adela, for giving flamenco a home so far from its birthplace — and for teaching us how to keep it alive.
