We want to acknowledge the contributions of the late Agonafer Shiferaw to the San Francisco jazz scene and rich legacy of the music in the Fillmore district. Born in Ethiopia, Shiferaw came to San Francisco in 1970 and opened the iconic Rasselas club on California and Divisidero in 1986 and later on Fillmore Street, helping revitalize the district's jazz heritage. The clubs presented local greats including Ledisi, Bishop Norman Williams, and SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Howard Wiley among others before the Fillmore location closed in 2013. Shiferaw passed away from cancer in November 2023. His widow Netsanet Alemayehu continues to run Sheba Jazz Lounge — the last remaining full time jazz venue on Fillmore.
