On October 4, 1970 Janis Joplin died of a he**in overdose in her room at the Landmark Hotel in Hollywood. She was 27 and finishing her second solo album, Pearl, which was released posthumously on January 11, 1971. Five of her singles reached the Billboard Hot 100, including her cover of “Me and Bobby McGee.” Her best-known recordings include “Piece of My Heart,” “Cry Baby,” “Down on Me,” “Ball and Chain,” “Summertime,” and “Mercedes Benz.”

Feinstein photographed Joplin for the cover of Pearl on October 3, 1970, the day before she died. The album came out in January 1971 and includes “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Cry Baby,” “Mercedes Benz,” and “Get It While You Can.”

On September 26, 1995, Prince released his 17th studio album, The Gold Experience, but not under the name Prince. He was in a contract dispute with Warner Bros. at the time, and this was the first of his albums credited to the unpronounceable symbol he used in place of his name. It reached No. 6 in the US and No. 4 in the UK, and it includes “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World,” “Endorphinmachine,” and “I Hate U.”

‘I took a couple of shots of the Beatles crossing Abbey Road one way. We let some of the traffic go by and then they walked across the road the other way, and I took a few more shots. The one eventually chosen for the cover was number five of six.’

On September 20, 1975, David Bowie achieved his first number-one single on the US Billboard Hot 100 with “Fame.” Co-written in New York City with John Lennon and rhythm guitarist Carlos Alomar, the funk track completed Bowie’s transition from British glam rock into American soul.

Terry had heard that Elizabeth Taylor was hoping to cast Bowie in her upcoming movie Blue Bird, so he arranged a shoot with the pair at director George Cukor’s home in Los Angeles, 1975.

Unfortunately Bowie showed up four hours late. “David showed up stoned out of his head,” Terry shared later, but he was apologetic and endearing, so after a while Taylor softened and began to have fun with the shoot.

Needless to say, Bowie didn’t get the part!

September 12, 1975. Pink Floyd released Wish You Were Here, a tribute to founding member Syd Barrett, who had left the band six years earlier as his mental health declined. During mixing, Barrett showed up at Abbey Road unannounced, so changed that bandmates didn’t recognize him until he spoke.

Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here Album Cover (UK), 1975 by Storm Thorgerson. Thorgerson’s design studio Hipgnosis shot the burning handshake image for real, with stuntman Ronnie Rondell set on fire fifteen times in a flame retardant suit until a gust of wind on the final take blew the flames across his face and produced the exact photo the band used.
