✨ During , we wanted to highlight one of our friends, and her team! ✨

These lessons accompany Hoosier Latinos: A Century of Struggle, Service and Success, written by Nicole Martinez-LeGrand and Danny Gonzales, and are designed for high school educators teaching , Indiana Studies, U.S. History, and related courses.

Through eight lesson plans guided by compelling questions, students explore the history of Latinos in Indiana and their contributions to local and national communities. They also incorporate the Indiana Historical Society's virtual exhibition, Be Heard: Latino Experiences in Indiana, and engage students in primary and secondary source analysis, oral histories, and critical reflection on immigration, civil rights, identity, culture, and lived experiences.

Unfortunately, the Indiana Historical Society education department () has experienced funding losses that have limited its ability to continue promoting work highlighting the diverse histories of marginalized communities in Indiana. This makes it all the more important for educators to continue using and sharing the resources that exist to bring these histories into our classrooms.

✨ Introducing our first artist for "Distance Between", Laila Lupita! ✨

Laila Lupita grew up in the border town of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Her experiences of loss and displacement created the necessity to look elsewhere for something that made sense. That “elsewhere” is what Laila calls the internal landscape, a place where we can transform life’s obstacles into personal growth.

Her art piece "Huipil Boxeador" is a theater performance that centers around altars and boxing. Inspired by the artist's memories of watching boxing matches with her grandfather as a child, the artist shadow boxes with her childhood memories of family separation and loss of loved ones as she moves from altar to altar, making connections between her family's story to the larger political context of the U.S/Mexico border and the feminicide in Ciudad Juarez where she grew up. She performs the art of boxing as a Mexican cultural sport to emphasize the endurance, strength and resilience of migrants and interacts with the various types of altars she has created to keep those she has lost close to her in Spirit and transform a story of loss and displacement into one of resistance, hope and love.

Laila’s creative practice includes painting, photography, costume making, performance and altars. She holds a BFA in Community Arts from the California College of the Arts and a Master of Arts in Performance Studies from UC Berkeley.

We are excited to announce "Distance Between: Stories of Refuge, Return, and Remembering", a multidisciplinary curriculum and performance project that brings refugee narratives into classrooms through the voices of first-, second-, and third-generation artists.

We will also be bringing these performances to four immigrant-majority schools in SFUSD with lesson plans that also accomodate all multilingual learners (emerging to advanced).

"Distance Between" features the amazing work of:

💗 Laila Lupita grew up in the border town of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Laila’s creative practice includes painting, photography, costume making, performance and altars. Inspired by the artist's memories of watching boxing matches with her grandfather as a child, "Huipil Boxeador" is a theater performance that centers around altars and boxing.

💗 Johnny Huy Nguyễn is a Vietnamese multidisciplinary dance artist and son of refugees based in unceded Ramaytush - Ohlone territory. "fifty fifty" explores the survival of Vietnamese refugees using card play, dice games, magic, food sharing, and piles of coins to connect our dancing bodies with the spirits of refugee ancestors across an expansively felt swath of time.

💗 Berkay Onurer is a musician, songwriter, and video artist from Turkey, currently based in the Bay Area. Through two original songs, “Where Are You Mom” and “An Extra in the Scene,” he explores the emotional journey of leaving home, searching for belonging, and rebuilding a sense of self in a new place.

💗 Pallavi Sarup is the founder and artist behind Hamesha Project. "Watan (वतन) Blues" is a collaborative blend of textile and woodworking mediums. The installation includes cyanotypes of hand drawn portraits of my family members, and scrap fabric from a South Asian clothing swap.

They created such beautiful pieces and we are excited to share them with you. Full artist performances will be available for free viewing in fall 2026.

Their Free Breakfast Program exposed how limited the federal government’s own breakfast program was and pressured Congress to permanently expand it nationwide in 1975, while the government was actively working to dismantle the Party.

School is back in session! 🚌🎓 Before you get all your schedule set for the school year consider trying out one of our FREE lessons! 📓📚✂️

All (well, just about!) our lessons are aligned with CCSS and Learning for Justice’s social justice standards. Meant to be interdisciplinary, these 60-120min supplementary lessons come with student-facing worksheets and interactive activities that will get your students creating solutions and cheering for each other and their communities. 🤔🔥
