Gan-san named his restaurant Goemon, after his namesake Ishikawa Goemon, a legendary outlaw of 16th-century Japan. A folk hero remembered for standing up to corruption and sharing wealth with the people, Goemon became a symbol of rebellion, resilience, and generosity—qualities that would define the restaurant’s identity. The first Goemon opened its doors on Irving Street in the Sunset District, quickly becoming a neighborhood gem.
