“In conjunction with Southern Exposure’s exhibition Where do you want ghosts to reside?, made up of artwork informed by forgotten Islamic myths, artists Morehshin Allahyari and Shirin Fahimi loose the bonds of the Mission District gallery to stage a one-night performance at Counterpulse. In Breaching Towards Other Futures, Allahyari and Fahimi channel a jinn from Middle Eastern mythology, Aisha Qandisha, known as the “opener,” and use Ilm al-raml (a form of geomancy, or divination with sand) to both tell the future and open doors to other futures—particularly ones not dominated by white, colonial or patriarchal concerns.”

KQED Arts provides daily in-depth coverage of the Bay Area's music, art, film, performing arts, literature and arts news, as well as cultural commentary and criticism.

Taravat Talepasand and Taraneh Hemami have been fierce advocates for representing Iran and Iranian people in all their complexity in their artwork. Talepasand (denim jacket), whose work was part of the Once at Present exhibit sponsored by the Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies, reconsiders the various ideological assumptions that index Iranian identity, state power, and gender in order to consider how the body and the image come to signify and rebel against normative notions of Iranian subjectivity via paintings, drawings, sculptures, and installations. Talepasand also believes we must take the name "Iran" and put it in contexts other than just negative news headlines. 📸: Afra's Corner
