Has it really been five months since I’ve done a Bo**ie Mashup Top 10? Apparently! And while I love having my crew take over, there were quite a few of my faves that hadn’t made the cut yet. So I’m looking back and highlighting mashups that feature my various summer obsessions, such as Slayyyter finally breaking, Nine Inch Noize at Coachella, Olivia Rodrigo’s Daisy Chain Fields festival, The Devil Wears Prada 2, and that Texas song by Ella Langley.

And of course, last week’s passing of both Dolly Parton and Tim Curry was an end-of-the-summer sucker punch to the gut. So we’re paying tribute at the end of this playlist the only way we know how. – Adriana Roberts

Jupiter Gatling here, with a rare appearance as this month’s Top 10 selector! These days, I spend a lot of nights at Berlin’s notorious KitKatClub, occasionally DJing q***r parties there. So after last Saturday’s Pride gig, Adriana A asked me to pick tracks for this month.

As you might have heard, Berlin’s Pride celebration was attacked. I grieve for the victims and those hurt, but our best response isn’t hate – it’s love. It’s to be LOUDER, QUEERER, and BOLDER. As cheesy as it sounds, creating spaces and parties where people can be free to be themselves, like Bo**ie Mashup, or KitKatClub, gives us all strength, safety, and a feeling of love. In this spirit, I’m sharing tracks I play at Berlin q***r parties and I’m here to tell you: we won’t budge, we’re gonna turn the music up, dance, and stay strong.

Special shout-outs to ShyBoy® for a “Bo**ie Exclusive” with his t.A.T.u./Charli mashup, to Adam Wright and Grant Buchowicz for the most unhinged mashups on here, and our own Chris Fox with a Bonnie Tyler mashup I still play out after all these years – even moreso now, since we lost her this past month. DJ Cummerbund just released his “Mashup Manifesto,” and it’s a great read for anyone looking to dip their toes into mashup culture and creation. 📕 And we’re not just saying that because he gave Bo**ie Mashup a much-appreciated shout-out on page 9! 🫶 In its breezy 64 pages (sized for reading on your phone) it summarizes everything from mashup history, songcraft, music theory, software tools, copyright issues, community engagement, and so much more. 🎓 It’s basically a “Mashups 101” course, and it’s available as a free PDF on his website at DJCummerbund.com/pages/ebook

“United State of Pop 2009 (Blame It On The Pop)” wasn’t the first year-end mega-mashup that former Bo**ie Mashup DJ Earworm ever made. 🎶 But it was definitely the one that went viral, at a time when our little mashup party — already 6 years in — really started to catch fire. 🔥

This insanely ingeniously-crafted track gave mashup culture a second wind, as this recent article in The New Yorker amply points out. 📰 It summarized a fantastic year in pop music, an era we now call “recession pop.” 🏡

Not coincidentally, this also signaled Bo**ie Mashup’s belated-but-meteoric rise, as we soon went weekly at DNA Lounge and become the biggest Saturday party in San Francisco for the entirety of the “Obama years.” 🚀 There’s a reason why people are nostalgic for this era and its music. 🍾

Congrats to DJ Earworm for creating something so iconic that The New Yorker is writing about it 17 years later. 🙌
