Pocket Opera

Pocket Opera Bay Area’s premiere chamber opera company since 1977
Discover the magic of opera in English! They render life in vivid color—no grand spectacle is required.

Our late founder Donald Pippin started Pocket Opera convinced that the essence of opera is found in the pure, unpretentious marriage of music and words. For over 45 years now, Pocket Opera continues to share this vision with our audiences: your experience is immediate and direct, and the songs seem to issue spontaneously from the heart of the singer. Our theatres are intimate, and the larger-than-

life tales of laughter, loss, and love are easily understood in incomparable English translations. Click Here to join our mailing list! https://vr2.verticalresponse.com/s/newsletter2199023256449

The fabulous as Lisette and as Prunier, seen here rehearsing a scene from our upcoming production of LA RONDINE. A fiery romance reminiscent of LA BOHEME’s Musetta and Marcello, this is one heated stage couple you won’t want to miss!

Our thanks as well to Joshua Kosman for his terrific review. And it's our honor to be in the same article where he memorializes the legendary Michael Tilson Thomas. Pocket Opera wishes to acknowlege the passing of this legendary Maestro.

It's an exciting, magical time here at Pocket Opera, as our production of 𝐀 𝐌𝐢𝐝𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭'𝐬 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦 is well into rehearsal. Art and science are merging together as one of our dear colleagues, Chris Uzelac, uses cutting edge technology to scan the head of Kirk Eichelberger, who plays the role of Bottom. Chris has designed a 3D Donkey head (uses advanced programs from Microsoft and Meta) and came in with a test print of it to fit onto Kirk's head. The final version will be custom made by the 3D printer to the size from the head scan. Remarkable! Bottom and the other Rustic Actors returned to rehearsal later that day.

And ANOTHER great review, this time from Theatre Eddy--

Pocket Opera's 'Madame Butterfly" sheds new, much-needed re-interpretation that vividly allows this story of love, misunderstanding, loss, and tragedy to be told in a manner more authentic and truthful of both cultures.
