Is it a vase or a jar? This week in our Intermediate Class we’re learning to throwing galleries for lids. Getting a lid to perfectly drop into the rim of the piece feels oh so good. There’s an art to trimming two pieces to fit together and leave just an 1/8th of space.

Tune in to see what we’re up to next week.

✨Twinkling stars for the holidays✨ This winter we saw so many ornaments through the kilns. Snowmen, gingerbread men, stars, and even pasta ornaments.

To make these stars 🌟 we rolled out thin sheets of clay. Then smoothed them and stamped star cookie cutters…just like if they were sugar cookies. At the wet stage, don’t forget a hole for the ornament hook! We glazed them in matte white, glossy white, shiny clear, and a warm beige. They made the perfect ‘clink’ against one another on the tree. 🎄

Have you ever wanted to make that *exact* shade of colored clay?

Join us for a deep dive on mason stains, metal oxides, and making brightly colored clay with porcelain. It’s an exploration in achieving very specific hues and tones of colored clay. Beginners to advanced students are welcome!

We’ll make richly saturated colored clay, and then cut it down with porcelain. We’ll make a perfect logarithmic gradient of colored clay, from rich dark hues to pastels to nearly white. Afterwards we’ll use our colored clay to make handbuilt pieces and demonstrate some fun ways to incorporate colored clay into your ceramic practice.

Beginning Tuesday for 4 weeks.

This January we’re offering a class on Oxide Washes. The magic of how to make, mix, and use them. ✨

An oxide wash is a metallic glaze colorant that’s a mixture of a metallic oxide and water that can be used to create color washes, enhance texture, and add metallic accents or earthy hues to pottery. We’ll cover what they are, how to spot them, how to make them from raw materials, and how to apply them.

We make all of our oxide washes in the studio from scratch…cobalt, copper, irons…and are constantly experimenting with different colors and recipes. It’s another way to apply color and enhance texture, especially great for handbuilding.

Join us for the journey! 4 weeks on Tuesday evenings beginning Jan 14th.

Coiling is a technique we’re seeing more of in the studio. rolls out round coils by hand and then layers and drapes them into sculptures. In the first photo she smoothed out the round, coiled layers and added a rough hewn texture to the outside. The texture catches the light just perfectly. Isn’t it stunning?

The second photos are an in progress piece where the coils remain and add a geologic feel to the piece. She meticulously adds each one to get the draped quality of gravity.

🎉We’re teaching a handbuilding course focused just on Coiling beginning Thurs, Nov 7. Join us to learn how to work this technique.
