Golden Thread Productions

Golden Thread Productions The first American theatre company devoted to the Middle East.

Golden Thread Productions, founded in 1996, is the first American theatre company focused on the Middle East. We produce passionate and provocative plays from and about the Middle East that celebrate the multiplicity of its perspectives and identities. We are a developmental catalyst and vibrant artistic home to artists at various stages of their career. We bring the Middle East to the American stage, creating treasured cultural experiences for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. We believe that immersing yourself in someone else’s experience is the best way to appreciate their point of view. Therefore, every play serves as an invitation to discover unexpected connections and engage in deeply moving conversations that last well beyond the life of the play. Our programs expose non-Middle Eastern audiences to the authentic voices and alternative perspectives of the region, while serving Middle Eastern audiences who rarely encounter meaningful reflections of their own culture in the performing arts. In our vast imagination, the Middle East is defined not by geographical boundaries and political separations, but as the shared experience of the people, who throughout history have been touched by its stories and culture. As such, Golden Thread’s work is borderless and serves to reorient the United States-Middle East relationship. In 2013 and 2016, Golden Thread was recognized by American Theatre Wing, the producers of the Tony Awards, for its important work in the national theatre scene, and was featured in the Bay Area in ABC 7’s Profiles of Excellence for its work in the local community.

Thank you, 48 Hills, for including ReOrient 2026 Festival as part of your Fall Arts Preview.

"Golden Thread’s 30th anniversary season has coincided with more endless western quagmires in the Middle East, all with no end in sight. Yet, those events have only strengthened the company’s resolve to tell Middle Eastern/North African (MENA) stories that go beyond the stereotypes of daily headlines."

The beloved festival begins performances on October 9. Get your tickets now!

Margaret Cho's punch-up, an immersive slasher, giant alien puppets, a bridge-spanning 'Lear,' a burlesque bonanza, much more

This past weekend, our new executive leadership and Board of Trustees took part in our annual planning retreat in San Francisco. It was an inspiring day of dreaming and plotting for our 30th Anniversary and beyond.

We are so thankful for this group of volunteers who give so much time, resource, and love to Golden Thread. And excited to welcome new Board members Selma Abinader, Evren Odcikin, and Matthew Spangler. Their commitment makes everything possible!

Thank you, KQED Arts, for including ReOrient 2026 Festival of New Plays in the list of 10 plays and musicals to see this Fall. We couldn't agree more!

Including shows about a lost jazz neighborhood, a women’s revolution and Abraham Lincoln’s wife run amok.

ReOrient 2026 artists made magic at the ReOrient Camp earlier this month!

The beauty of the ReOrient Festival has always been its community, and this year is no different. The creative teams and casts gathered on the USF Campus to meet each other, celebrate, and start work on the five short plays of this year's Festival! The day was a joyous affair of art making and community building. The day consisted of a full read of the plays, discussions, ensemble building, and the launch of the design process. We can't wait to share the fruits of their labor with our audience on October 9-November 1, 2026:

Lawyer Joshua Colangelo-Bryan’s book receives another award. The book details the experiences of a man imprisoned for over five years at Guantánamo Bay.

We’re honored to have commissioned Abhishek Majumdar to adapt this important book into a play — supported by Humanitas Media. We look forward to sharing the play in development and production with our audiences in the seasons to come.

The fifth and final play in our ReOrient 2026 Festival line-up is... CAMOUFLAGE by celebrated Palestinian writer Ahmed Masoud.

This moving series of monologues brings to life surprisingly funny and boldly human stories of four young Palestinian people: A refugee boy on a refugee boat is troubled by more than the waters surrounding his makeshift boat; a girl in Ramallah navigates marriage proposals; a taxi driver in Gaza taxi driver tries to find a date on Tinder; and n actor in Haifa chases his dream.

The play is directed by Nick McDow Musleh, who most recently appeared in our production of THE RETURN, and dramaturged by Marina Johnson.

Play No. 4 in our ReOrient 2026 Festival line-up is... BLOOD FRUIT by Golden Thread affiliated artist and celebrated Palestinian-Irish writer Hannah Khalil.

BLOOD FRUIT is a moving story about the power of protest and the difference individuals can make against systems of oppression. It tells the true story of Mary Manning, a young shop worker in 1980s Dublin who refused to handle South African grapefruits and convinced her co-workers to strike to protest the Apartheid regime.

Hannah's brilliant play SCENES FROM 71* YEARS received its U.S. premiere at Golden Thread in 2019 and she has previously been featured in ReOrient 2017 with THE REHEARSAL. This production is directed by Golden Thread Managing Director Wynne Chan and dramaturged by Nakissa Etemad.
