We are thrilled to announce the successful hatching of 3 Magellanic penguin chicks, our first chicks in nearly three years!

The penguin “nursery” has been bustling with the shrill squeaks and peeps of the 4-week-old fluffy chicks, as dedicated bird staff have been hand-rearing them nearly 24-hours a day since they hatched in mid-May.

SF Zoo’s Magellanic penguins are considered the most successful breeding colony in an AZA-accredited facility. This year, we were approved to breed by the Magellanic Penguin SSP, and our team opted to hand-rear the chicks rather than have them parent-reared as some of the potential parents were not considered experienced.

For now, the chicks are behind-the-scenes, growing steadily. Guests will see them for the first time later this summer when they take their ceremonious “march” to Penguin Island.

(Note: the red lighting in the video comes from the heat lamps. Their nursery is both cooled and heated for comfortability of the chicks. As they age, and get better insulating feathers, the heat lamps will be raised until they are at a cool ambient temp. Then there is a seamless introduction to outside temperatures when the time comes)

Jasiri, our 10-year-old male African lion, recently underwent a comprehensive wellness exam, and we’re pleased to report he is in good health for a middle-aged lion.

Jasiri was very cooperative for a voluntary anesthesia injection, allowing our veterinary team to safely complete a full suite of planned diagnostics on the 460-pound lion. His physical exam showed he was in great physical condition, with no significant abnormalities detected, and, of course, he has a great hairdo! Male lions are known for their iconic manes, which are unique to each individual and can signal everything from age and health to social status. X-rays and a brief abdominal ultrasound likewise revealed no concerning findings. As previously reported, Jasiri does have a historical diagnosis of a congenital spinal malformation identified when he was just one-year-old. This condition appears clinically stable and well-managed at this time.

Routine wellness exams are an important part of ensuring the Zoo’s animals receive the highest standard of care, helping us monitor their health and well-being throughout their lives. We’re proud to say Jasiri’s health report looks good!

It took a big team to work in tandem to ensure Jasiri’s exam went smoothly. We’re grateful to his dedicated caretakers, curators, and veterinary team for their diligence and expertise to make certain Jasiri continues to receive the best care possible.

As we previously reported, while we have announced a future pause in our African lion program, we continue to care for our pair as we always have. The lions will be here for a while longer, and we encourage you to come see them.

Black bears, like Juneau and Valdez, are incredibly curious and intelligent! With their strong sense of smell, there was no doubt that they responded with gusto to some new enrichment stuffed with treats! Their caretakers are always devising new ways to stimulate and keep them thoroughly engaged!

Community partnerships help make a difference for both people and animals!

As part of the recent 2nd Annual Girl Scouts Day, members of Girl Scouts of Northern California visited the zoo and created a beautiful paper chain enrichment item for our macaw flock using non-toxic markers and glue. Enrichment plays an important role in animal welfare by encouraging natural behaviors, providing mental stimulation, and adding variety to an animal's day.

Our three macaws thoroughly enjoyed exploring and interacting with their colorful creation, and we are grateful to the Girl Scouts for the time, creativity, and care they put into making it. Experiences like these not only benefit our animals but also help connect our community to wildlife and conservation through hands-on learning and engagement.

Thank you, Girl Scouts of Northern California, for helping make enrichment both fun and meaningful!

Introducing Dara!

Since her arrival from Como Zoo in April, the newest member of our troop of western lowland gorillas has been acclimating to her new home. She’s been slowly but surely getting to know the rest of the troop: silverback Cecil, and the females Bawang, Monifa and Kimani!

This past week she’s been exploring the outdoor habitat on her own, which has been going so well that she’s ready to meet the public. While the social introductions of Dara and our other gorillas continue to unfold you might see her on her own, or paired with another female (possibly Kimani, they have become fast friends!) On occasion you might not see her out with the rest of the troop, while she spends time inside.

According to her caretakers, 22-year-old Dara is quite the climber! She is also bold in her exploration of the habitat, having scoped out places for the best views, and has the hang of using tools to forage for her favorite treats.
