“When you go on a journey with David Lynch it’s a trip you’ve never been on before — and may never want to take again — but it’s unforgettable.” — Barry Gifford

It all started with two words. David Lynch came across the phrase “lost highway” in Barry Gifford’s novel Night People and knew he wanted to make something out of it. The two joined forces to write one of cinema’s most hypnotic and unsettling neo-noirs.

Starring Bill Pullman, Patricia Arquette, and Robert Blake, LOST HIGHWAY (1997) takes us down a road of fractured identities, obsession, murder, and mystery.

Saturday, October 17 & 20 at The Roxie, as part of BARRY GIFFORD: WILD LIVES, LOST HIGHWAYS, celebrating the longtime Bay Area writer’s 80th birthday on October 18.

As Gifford himself put it: “Time to fasten your seat belt.”

To coincide with the exhibition, The Roxie presents The Future According to Syd Mead, tracing his influence from the neon-soaked streets of BLADE RUNNER and the industrial world of ALIENS to the cyberpunk dystopia of JOHNNY MNEMONIC: IN BLACK & WHITE and the digital glow of TRON.

San Francisco Opera tenor Pene Pati joins us in person at the Roxie this Sunday, October 11 at 6 PM for a special presentation of TENOR: MY NAME IS PATI, followed by a Q&A with director Rebecca Tansley.

Tansley’s documentary follows Samoan tenor brothers Pene and Amitai Pati, weaving together family home movies, humor, cultural pride, and breathtaking performances from San Francisco Opera and stages around the world.

Pene Pati stars in San Francisco Opera’s upcoming production of Massenet’s Manon, running October 15–November 1.

On October 18, novelist and screenwriter Barry Gifford turns 80. To celebrate, we’re spending a few nights in his unmistakable world of lovers, drifters, criminals, dreamers, roadside danger, black humor, and American noir.

LOST HIGHWAY, written by Gifford and David Lynch together.

ROY’S WORLD: BARRY GIFFORD’S CHICAGO, drawn from Gifford’s autobiographical Roy stories and his own memories of the world that shaped him, playing with MY LAST MARTINI, based on a Gifford story and starring TWIN PEAKS favorite Wendy Robie.

PERDITA DURANGO, directed by Álex de la Iglesia, co-scripted by Gifford and adapted from his novel, starring Rosie Perez, Javier Bardem, and James Gandolfini.

And WILD AT HEART, David Lynch’s Palme d’Or-winning adaptation of Gifford’s novel, presented in a new 4K restoration.
