This Fourth of July, trade patriotic myth-making for one of cinema’s greatest portraits of ambition and illusion, Stanley Kubrick's BARRY LYNDON.

Adapted from a novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, this tale follows an opportunistic Irishman climbing the social ladder from ambitious villager to reluctant soldier to spoiled nobleman, as sourly witty as it is visually sumptuous.

“An ice-pack of a movie, a masterpiece in ever insignificant detail… It’s a coffee-table movie; the stately tour of European high life is a three-hour slide show for art history majors.” – Pauline Kael

Calling all ROXIE KIDS! Join us for Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola’s tender story of young love and determination, MOONRISE KINGDOM.

Nominated for an Oscar for Original Screenplay, this quirky tale finds twelve-year-olds Sam and Suzy escaping from Camp Ivanhoe and absconding into the wilderness off the New England coast. The pair fall too deep into their cute courtship to care that every adult in their lives is trying to locate them before a dangerous storm makes landfall.

WITH HASAN IN GAZA, a cinematic reflection on loss and memory by Palestinian filmmaker Kamal Aljafari, starts this weekend at The Roxie.

Three MiniDV tapes of life in Gaza from 2001 were recently rediscovered. What started as a search for a former prison mate from 1989 led to an unexpected road trip from the north to the south of Gaza with Hasan, a local guide whose fate remains unknown.

“With this crux – to film, or not to film – With Hasan in Gaza brilliantly centres the need to bear witness as no less than a matter of life and death, preservation and loss, liberation and occupation.” - Arron Kennon, Sight and Sound

Co-presented with the Arab Film and Media Institute

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of trailblazer Elaine May’s singular gangster film MIKEY AND NICKY (1976) here at The Roxie. This harrowing portrait of male friendship turned tragic was inspired by real-life figures from the filmmaker's own childhood and is anchored by electrifying performances from its stars John Cassavetes and Peter Falk.

“A dark dazzler… Over the course of one evening, the two pass an entire lifetime together talking, walking and waiting for the inevitable. Like all May’s films, has the hard-to-capture feeling of spontaneous life” – The New York Times

Next up in ALMOST MIDNIGHTS: Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s final film, QUERELLE.

Set amid an expressionistic soundstage vision of a French sea port, this daring adaptation of a novel by Jean Genet recounts the tragedy of a handsome sailor (Brad Davis) as he is drawn into a vortex of sibling rivalry, murder, and explosive sexuality. Completed just before Fassbinder’s sudden death at age thirty-seven, QUERELLE finds the director pushing his embrace of artifice and taboo-shattering depiction of q***r desire to new extremes.

See this deliriously stylized tale of hothouse lust and simmering violence on Saturday, June 27 at 11:30 PM.

From the visionary genius of director Kunihiko Ikuhara (Revolutionary Girl Utena, Sailor Moon), ADOLESCENCE OF UTENA is a cult classic, avant-garde masterpiece of love and transformation straddling the line between fairytale and surrealist opera.

"Utena is a towering achievement of late-90s animation that demands to be experienced exactly as intended: loud, overwhelming, and on the largest screen possible." — Polygon
