Need more le****ns in your life? Look no further! Come join us for Scissor Cinema!

Catch a special screening of Alice Wu's, Saving Face on June 6, 2026 @7:30PM!

Saving Face (2004) Wil is a le***an, but she does not dare tell her widowed mother, Hwei-lan, or her very traditional grandparents. She's shocked, however, to find out she's not the only one in her family with romantic secrets when she learns that her 48-year-old mother is pregnant. Unwilling to reveal who the father is, Hwei-lan is kicked out of her parents' home and must move in with Wil, which puts a strain on Wil's budding relationship with openly gay Vivian.

We're honored to get the chance to screen Cheryl Dunye's, The Watermelon Woman!

The Watermelon Woman (1996) is a 1996 American romantic drama-comedy film written, directed, and edited by Cheryl Dunye. The first feature film directed by a Black le***an, it stars Dunye as Cheryl, a young Black le***an working a day job in a video store while trying to make a film about Fae Richards, a Black actress from the 1930s known for playing the stereotypical “mammy" roles to which Black actresses were relegated during the period.

June 5th: The Watermelon Woman by Cheryl Dunye

The Watermelon Woman (1996) is a 1996 American romantic drama-comedy film written, directed, and edited by Cheryl Dunye. The first feature film directed by a Black le***an, it stars Dunye as Cheryl, a young Black le***an working a day job in a video store while trying to make a film about Fae Richards, a Black actress from the 1930s known for playing the stereotypical “mammy" roles to which Black actresses were relegated during the period.

June 6th: Saving Face by Alice Wu

Saving Face (2004) Wil is a le***an, but she does not dare tell her widowed mother, Hwei-lan, or her very traditional grandparents. She's shocked, however, to find out she's not the only one in her family with romantic secrets when she learns that her 48-year-old mother is pregnant. This screening is in collaboration with Less Than Half Pictures, our in-house Production Team, where 2/4 of it’s founders are Le***an filmmakers.

Please join us for two nights of fun, themed drinks, laughter, and community. See you there!

We are thrilled to announce that Brava! for Women in the Arts has been awarded a grant from the Community Challenge Grants (CCG)!

This year, we are launching a Community Activation Initiative at 24th & York featuring artists-in-residence centering immigrant history and resilience in San Francisco’s Mission District. Through storytelling, collaborative art-making, public clean-up days and public celebration, this initiative will transform Brava and its surrounding corner into a vibrant hub of cultural pride and belonging.

Our upcoming workshop dates to be announced soon, and save the date for the Brava Block Party on October 17!

Thank you to the CCG team for your support of the communities we serve! Its an honor to continue cultivating the artistic expression of women, people of color, youth, LGBTQIA+, and other underrepresented voices.
