Inspiring Climate Action & Ocean Conservation through stewardship. Aquarium of the Bay is San Francisco Bay’s Aquarium.
(11928)

Aquarium of the Bay partners with The Bay Institute to protect, restore and inspire the conservation of San Francisco Bay, from the Sierra to the sea. Our passion and our work are locally-focused, but have a broad impact that touches upon every major challenge facing our global environment. We are passionate about providing fun and unforgettable encounters with our natural world in ways that ignit

e both wonder and conservation. We do this from our 50,000 square foot building at the heart of San Francisco's history and culture. We are nestled in the shadow of Coit Tower and Telegraph Hill on Fisherman’s Wharf at PIER 39, along the City’s “Walkable Waterfront.”

We also own a research vessel and partner with several boat fleets to take our conservation, education and research out on the Bay. Aquarium of the Bay is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), and certified as a Green Business by the city of San Francisco. Each quarterly meeting will introduce new topics, feature interactive activities, and connect members with fellow Gills from our local community and beyond.

Please note that gills must be accompanied by an adult. While the program highlights the contributions of women in STEM, Gills Club is open to all children who are eager to learn and explore. 🔍🧠

Did you know that the California Moray Eel is actually a fish? Here we see this shy creature who loves to hide in rocks in and crevices in the warmer and shallower waters along the Southern California coast out and about. Ooops! There she goes!

See if you can find the moray in our Discover The Bay gallery.

We had an incredible time learning from shark biologist Dr. Meghan Holst, who taught us about how different shark species have evolved adaptations to help them survive in their environments. 👩‍⚕️🦈 Our young scientists then put their creativity to work by designing their own sharks, complete with their own unique adaptions! 🌊

Huge thanks to all of our gills club members who could make it and to Dr. Meghan Holst for sharing her knowledge with us! Keep an eye out for announcements about future Gills Club meetings in the next coming months! 💙

San Francisco's nonprofit Aquarium of the Bay's Animal Care volunteer Luke gently takes the rosy boa for a challenging slither on the pegboard in the early morning sunshine.

One of only two species of boa native to California, rosy boas are found in deserts and grasslands in the southwestern United States.

Happy World Sea Lion Day!🦭✨ These sunbathing beauties have been here at Pier 39 for over 30 years and have become one of San Francisco’s most iconic sights! A fun reminder of how important healthy ecosystems are for both wildlife and people alike. 🌁
