Aquarium of the Bay partners with The Bay Institute to protect, restore and inspire the conservation of San Francisco Bay, from the Sierra to the sea. Our passion and our work are locally-focused, but have a broad impact that touches upon every major challenge facing our global environment. We are passionate about providing fun and unforgettable encounters with our natural world in ways that ignit

e both wonder and conservation. We do this from our 50,000 square foot building at the heart of San Francisco's history and culture. We are nestled in the shadow of Coit Tower and Telegraph Hill on Fisherman’s Wharf at PIER 39, along the City’s “Walkable Waterfront.”

We also own a research vessel and partner with several boat fleets to take our conservation, education and research out on the Bay. Aquarium of the Bay is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), and certified as a Green Business by the city of San Francisco. Our last Gills Club meeting was so much fun! Gills learned about shark anatomy through a real shark dissection and got an up close look at what makes these incredible animals so unique.🦈🔬😳

Today we celebrate the incredible staff who continue to help make the Aquarium of the Bay flourish, including our members behind the scenes and dedicated volunteers! We couldn’t continue to do this work without the passion, care, and commitment of everyone who has been a part of our journey. 🦦🦦🦦Adorable and playful river otters await visitors at San Francisco's nonprofit Aquarium of the Bay. Found throughout the Bay Area and its river systems, river otters are considered a watershed ambassador as they are an indicator of a healthy water system; meaning if you see a river otter in the wild, you know that waterway is healthy. 🦦🦦🦦

Your ticket purchases and donations help us continue our nonprofit mission to protect and preserve these animal ambassadors and others in San Francisco Bay and its watershed.

Did you know that San Francisco's nonprofit Aquarium of the Bay also has a beautiful collection carnivorous plants? This flowering butterwort is native to California and can be found along our Pacific coast. Small insects are trapped on its sticky green leaves which then curl up around them to enjoy a delicious meal!

You will find the Carnivorous Plants exhibit next to the tide pool in our Touch the Bay gallery.

🦀🦀🦀 A couple of days ago we posted a video of the DECORATOR CRAB adorned with just a few bits of seaweed attached to its carapace. In this photo we see the decorator decked out in full sea anemone camouflage. Each anemone is self-attached by the crafty crab so it blends right in with the other anemones attached to the rock. Hard to spot, yes? Many of its predators will pass it right by. 🦀🦀🦀
