I hadnāt touched a rope in months, felt burned out, went to and trained for a week somewhat monkishly with some truly brilliant aerialists, and then I came home and felt so inspired I made an act in a week for TemptASIAN. No big costumes, no sexy gimmicks, just touching a rope for five minutes on stage because it feeds me.
I had toyed with making an identity act for the occasion about being mixed-race Filipinx but realized that my philosophy remains that every act is an identity act if you do it right. My very brown father gave me the gift of music and my connection to it. He gave me athleticism. My white mother gave me an appreciation of art, of composition and a love of dance (even if I never really trained it.) If you look between the lines they are thereā generationally passing down what their parents gave themā in my movement, in my choice of color, timing, musicality, the risks that I take for my art.
