YouthAware Educational Theatre New Conservatory Theatre Center's Theatre-in-Education Programs for Grades K-12 Pre and post-show handouts including questions, community resources etc.

The YouthAware Educational Theatre program presents a season of educational plays for grades K-12 both in house at NCTC and on tour all over Northern & Central California. The YouthAware program began in the late 1980’s at the height of the AIDS epidemic, when the artistic and executive director of NCTC, Ed Decker, identified a need for theater-in-education programs around HIV prevention. YouthAwa

re still presents plays each season for SFUSD grades K-5 that help fulfill the requirement for AIDS education in the district by educating about HIV/AIDS prevention, and by working to help alleviate any stigmas still attached to the disease. Other YouthAware topics include diversity, homophobia, school safety, bullying and respect for grades 2-12. YouthAware programs are cast with professional actors who reflect the diverse Bay Area community. Performances include facilitated post-show discussions with the cast and student audiences. are provided for teachers to continue discussion in the classroom. Sara Staley has been the director of the YouthAware program since the fall of 2001. The YouthAware Educational Theatre program reaches over 20,000 young people annually.
