During quarantine everyone was forced to use their creativity to come up with fun things to do while at home. One of my favorites was the Dutch Instagram page which started the “recreate artwork challenge”. Here are some of my favorite ones. Enjoy!

We had such a special event yesterday. Our first in-person event after the pandemic. We painted the gorgeous view of the Bay Bridge that we could see out of the window while sipping on some wine. Such a great day!

When it comes to the amount of paint you add to your paintbrush, rule of thumb: less is more. Working slow and using less paint on your paintbrush will allow you to have more control over the direction your painting is going, and it will make your life easier and less messy. This rule apply even more to your first layers on the background. The exception would be if you’re specifically trying to create a thick and rough texture on your painting. But if you’re a beginner artist, it’s better to slow it down and use less paint.

AKA fear of being vulnerable, which ties together all the other two fears we’ve talked about. We’re not perfect, and we don’t like to feel like we failed, especially when trying something that we think we don’t master yet. It feels better to stay in your comfort zone than trying anything new. Being vulnerable will, ultimately, allow you to keep creativity flowing into your life. Next time you’re doing anything creative, try compartmentalizing your fear so new ideas can come in. To quote Franklin Roosevelt: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”.

I don’t believe there are any mistakes in painting, only choices. And sometimes your choices aren’t aligned with what you want to express with your painting, but it’s still not a mistake. Art isn’t an exact science and if you’d like to change the direction your painting is going, you can simply correct it, paint over it, reverse it or re-route it. So please don’t be afraid to make choices when working on your painting - you can change it anytime. Also, always remember the wise words from master Bob Ross: “There are no mistakes, only happy accidents”.

Truth is that there’s no perfection in art. The process of painting is the art piece itself. If we approach our art with that mindset we will be able to switch the narrative, and focus on the joy of creating art, which will end up reflecting on your painting. So next time you create art, sit back, relax, drop all judgement and let your creativity flourish.
