“Primavera”
Colored pencil on black paper
I started this drawing back in 2018. It’s crazy to imagine it took me 4 years to complete. Well it really took me a couple months with a 4 year gap between.
I’m so different from the person who started this piece…but finally completing it reminded me that I am still in many ways still so similar. I am my many phases of completion and rebirth. The ever growing and evolving of oneself. The continuation of a cycle, the return to a season. Primavera. I grow flowers within. Grow them from my internal roots every year. And watch them wither and die, only to regrow them again. Returning more vibrant, and lushes as ever. Primavera.

Happy Pride! I present to you my latest piece from the series Emancipation from Sun. “Saint Niko”, a trans rendition on the classic early Christian martyr turned q***r icon, Saint Sebastian.
Saint Sebastian is famously portrayed with arrows shot through his body, though this did not kill him. Italian Renaissance painters rejected earlier depictions of Saint Sebastian and favored a youthful man, semi-naked, handsomely built and tied to a tree with piercing arrows. This imagery slowly becoming more eroticized, and a ho******ic lens has been placed on the Saint of archers and athletes. With contemporary renditions on gay magazines like Out, painters and photographers have illustrated this visual imagery in a more ho******ic manner.
After watching the movie Sebastiane (1976) by Derek Jarman back in 2008, I’ve wanted to take this a step further by deepen it’s ties to q***rness and transness. The idea of a trans Saint Sebastian felt fitting to depict the idea of martyrdom and confronting constant societal and religious ideologies of gender. As Saint Sebastian was prosecuted for his beliefs so is the q***r rendition. And in my version, I’ve removed pain all together. No arrow pierces them as a confident and fearless Saint stares adversity in its eyes. Surrounded by a bed of roses and a friendly companion hummingbird, as the reminder to stay present and faithful in yourself through all of the journey’s challenges.
Big thanks to for being my stunning saint. You have thought me so much and have supported me endlessly. đź’•
And & for letting me showcase this piece for the first time at our Bloom exhibition.

“Holy Body”
B-Mix Clay, Glaze, 17”x 14”x 7”
I wanted to deconstruct the way my chest, the male chest is a symbol of masculinity. I wanted to release myself from the imprisonment that this imagery does to my gender. I wanted to erase its grip on me so I transformed it into something beautiful, something feminine. I returned it to its holy form, gave it back to nature and cleansed it from societal ideologies.
Healing the body with medicinal plants from the Amazon rainforest like CopaĂba, Boldo and BarbatimĂŁo. A cultural tradition my great grandmother would practice in Brazil. The plants on the sculpture are sculpted in reference to these herbs. The humming birds are in reference to species like the Brazilian Ruby, and the white chinned Sapphire all from the Amazon rainforest as well.

Here she sits in all her glory, the Protector of all.
This is the first piece from my series “Emancipation from Sin” where I investigate Mythology, Folklore, and religion for the ways the Society has constructed the “other”.
I was very drawn to the story of Medusa as a villain and question the origin stories as to why she was seen as the most viscous femme fatale. I wanted to portray her as not only a q***r woman, but a black women as these individuals have been Villianized in society.
I wanted to paint a version of empowerment, a moments of defiance, an individual that knew her power and was unapologetic about who she was.
Finding symbolism and imagery to evoke q***rness and blackness, an understanding of Greek mythology but also an ambitious push for a contemporary spin on the story allowed me to portray Medusa in a manner that spoke to the q***r experience today.
A big shout out to my muse .simone.lewis, and for your guidance and expertise. Looking forward to expanding this series!

Wow I’m at a loss for words. Thank you so much to everyone that stopped by for the Honors exhibition, blanket statements, I felt like a real artist last night, it all felt like a dream come true.

I had a pleasure talking to each of you and seeing your reactions gave me so much joy. A special thank you to my best friend, cousin, and biggest supporter for flying all the way from SD to come to the opening. And to and for the guidance and teachings in my advanced ceramics and advanced painting class this semester. I continue to learn each day from both of you and it is always inspiring.

Also special thanks to my Fall 2021 Honors Cohort, a group of extremely talented artists! You all inspire me daily to keep making work.

Love you all, and until the next show ! ❤️❤️❤️

Self Portriat- (how do you see yourself?)
Wow my first art piece at UC Berkeley. I’ve never had an art piece change so much.. My professor really pushed us to go further than what we are used to. He said “if you end up with what you expected, you’re doing it wrong.” The experimental discoveries that I did during this process have truly changed me. I dove into this using only a palette knife and then finalized it with paintbrushes.
When I think of myself, or if I was to look at myself what do I see? I saw someone who is constantly distracted by thoughts of the past. Overwhelmed by “what if’s and why’s”. I see someone who can’t get out of my head, engulfed by a forest of thoughts and anxieties. And as I painted myself I kept getting deep and deeper into the forest and I could seem to get out. Humming birds make you focus on the now. And while I was painting this a humming bird came into the studio as if to look at the piece and flew away. It was a surreal experience cause I realized I had forgot to put it in the painting.

“Chosen Touch”
Growth was predetermined, with lustful colors of passion and with retaliation of invisibility. Growing with beauty and visible defenses due to the lessons of love, and of heartache. You were once welcomed into my garden, but now you can only stare from afar. If you dare to touch, caress with caution, for the poisoned and punctured will never feel the same. - my gardens grows fungi and cacti.
Oil on canvas. Third project of the semester.
