The SFGFF, along with the Modern Greek Studies Foundation, mourns the recent passing of a very special woman who was instrumental in the creation of our film festival — Patricia “Pat” Joan Aleck (1937–2026).
Pat was President of the Modern Greek Studies Foundation when the idea for our film festival was first introduced more than 25 years ago. She embraced the vision, helped shepherd it into existence, and remained a steadfast supporter, avid attendee, and dear friend ever since.
An educator by profession and a devoted volunteer, Pat lived a life of service to others. She dedicated herself to the Greek Orthodox Church at the local, Metropolis, and national levels, as well as to numerous Hellenic causes and the greater community. Pat had a welcoming spirit and a quiet grace that allowed her to guide every group she was involved with, even through challenging or contentious moments. She was a calm and reassuring presence who made people feel at ease and empowered others to get things done.
We have gathered photos of Pat together with many members of our community, some of whom are also no longer with us. These images reflect a time that has passed, but whose memories will forever remain in our hearts.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Pat’s sister, Deedy, and to her extended family. Pat will be dearly missed, and her legacy will continue to live on through all those whose lives she touched.
