Young Performers Theatre

Young Performers Theatre To inspire a love of theatre at the earliest possible age, building a life long appreciation for performing arts.

About
Our Mission
Our mission is to inspire a love of theatre and the performing arts in children at the youngest possible age, through education and complete immersion, to build the foundation for a life long appreciation for the performing arts. Theatre Arts Academy

YPT’s Theatre Arts academy teaches children as young as three years old the fundamentals of dramatization and instructs older chil

dren in acting, performance and musical theatre. Advanced students from the age of nine are invited to audition for main-stage plays, where they have the opportunity to join our Repertory. The Academy also sends teachers into schools to conduct acting and creative play workshops. Outreach
Founded on the belief that all children need exposure to live theatre, YPT maintains an Outreach Program. Over the past eight years, the Program has donated more than 20,000 tickets to over 30 Bay Area community organizations, giving children, without other opportunity, the rare chance to see live theatre with kids just like them on stage. Theatre in Education
Beginning in 1998 with funding from the Miriam and Peter Haas foundation, YPT launched a Theatre In Education program, sending theatre professionals who specialize in early creative education into schools that do not otherwise offer classes in theatre. Because of the current lack of formal creative play or drama discipline in the San Francisco city schools, TIE will work not only on short-term theatrical projects in the classroom, but on educating teachers about the value of creative drama exercises in their students’ regular schoolwork. In this way, TIE hopes to impact and enrich city school curricula for the long term. History
Young Performers Theatre (Anthony Manning Kunin Foundation) is a non-profit children’s theatre located at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. In 1982, theatre educator Matilda Kunin founded YPT to honor her son Anthony, who was killed in a tragic accident. Since then, YPT has presented over one hundred main-stage children’s productions of classics such as Peter Pan and Winnie the Pooh as well as premieres by local playwrights, including The Adventures of Six Toes, written by San Francisco author Danny Martin and The Baker Street Irregulars by Sean Owens. YPT is the only full-time children’s theatre in the San Francisco Bay Area, and one of the very few theatres in the country offering introductory acting classes to children as young as three years old. Over YPT’s thirty-year history, the theatre has demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to involving children in theatre at the earliest ages, and sustaining their interest in the arts for a lifetime.

Funny, heartfelt, and wildly imaginative, Tunnel Top Travelers is a story about growing up, speaking up, and finding connection in uncertain times. Because sometimes, the real treasure isn’t what you find—it’s who you find it with. www.ypt.org/tickets

YPT alum Emily Cronan wrote Tunnel Top Travelers specifically for YPT actors. The play deftly weaves together ideas they came up with for their own characters, one of whom communicates mainly through meows. There’s an a ca****la song about unicorns and Pokémon, along with references to cultural touchstones such as Super Mario, Olivia Rodrigo and Bad Bunny.

Packed with laughs, imagination and surprises aplenty, Tunnel Top Travelers is a high-energy, family-friendly story about courage, curiosity and what can happen when kids take the lead.

As many of you know, these are exceptionally challenging times for the arts.

Despite our class and camp enrollments being stronger than ever, and the joy of presenting our first full production since 2020, we are facing financial strain because donations have dropped off from the outpouring of support we saw in the wake of the pandemic.

That said, we are reaching out today with hopeful news: a generous YPT family has offered to match donations up to $9,000 this summer. That means every dollar you give between now and Labor Day will go twice as far!

So if you are able, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to help us continue enriching the lives of children through the transformative power of theatre.
