The Great Highway Gallery

The Great Highway Gallery Outer Sunset fine art gallery featuring contemporary works in all mediums by emerging local artists.

The Great Highway is a fine art gallery and working studio featuring contemporary works in all mediums. The gallery was founded by John Lindsey, a San Francisco resident with San Francisco Art Institute roots who carries a deep appreciation for images and ideas that explore where land meets water. The Gallery supports and promotes a diverse group of artists who seek sincere beauty, challenge conve

ntional thinking and amuse us with conceptual ideas in their work. The studio works with these artists in developing, printing, and presenting their works. Located in San Francisco’s Outer Sunset district, The Great Highway gallery’s mission is to explore, search, seek, analyze, and collect the work of those artists who push the boundaries of today’s creative mediums while nurturing the ongoing conversations that exist in the micro-communities found in today’s complex social make-up.

We Are No Different
A Golden Gate Mixtape

I moved to San Francisco in the late eighties and have lived here ever since, with a brief year-long sojourn that solidified my love of our beloved Golden Gate.

One of the reasons I love it here so much is the people. I see every person as a different song, poem, or story. Everyone has opinions, everyone disagrees, but somehow, we live in a bubble of natural beauty that grounds us, brings us joy, and connects us.

In these modern times, when everything is available and nothing is hidden, we are exposed to everything we want and don’t want. We are more connected yet also more isolated.

These artists are very different, each with their own practices, expressions, and experiences, but all connected by fifty miles of Northern California Coastline. Some in this show are true natives, and some are our adopted kin, our Ghana, because they have shown their love and respect for these lands. Some have left at times and come back home to us, because in the end, we all leave our hearts here. The golden gate ethos connects them, befriends them, is there for them, and it doesn’t drive them apart. They are no different.

Hope to see you,
John

new work up through Nov 30.

Stop by Th - Sunday - I am always around, either in the gallery or next door at . I will always let you in.

Ari and I started a conversation back in 2022. Over time, I watched his two bodies of work come together to create a new voice for his expression. It is incredibly satisfying, gratifying and humbling to put trust in an artist and be suprised, proud and grateful for what emerges.

43rd & Lawton

New work from . I had seen Ari for years surfing the beach. We never connected. A few years back he came to the Mark Cunningham & Ethan Estess exhibit. We made the connection. I have been following his work since then. We tried getting him in here awhile back but our lease negotiation got in the way. We are excited to have him here now. Stop by Saturday night. Live jazz w the quartet - soup and drinks next door . Hope to see you here and share Ari’s expressions of his connections with life and the environment around him.

“The first years of my practice were centered on the shapes, patterns and colors that reflect my connection to the ocean and mother nature. Those early pieces were measured and exact. When I look back, I realize that the order and desire for precision in my work was a form of self soothing and attempt at control during a time of great change in my life.

Lately, I have been letting go in my practice. A journey toward more openness. The tribute to mother nature and all her beauty is still there but now I’m able to share my internal exploration of the complexities of life. Less afraid of making mistakes. So all of my layers- they are coming out now.

The joy, the loss, the flow, connection and struggle. Through it all….always the love.”
