ANNOUNCEMENT!
I am excited to announce my poetry book, birth language, to be published by Tia Chucha Press in August 2026. This has been a long time in the making, and I’m grateful. Happy APRIL (National Poetry Month)....

We are 4 months out, and I’d appreciate if you share the announcement, pre-order a book & let your colleagues at colleges, bookstores and cultural centers know I will offer readings and lectures. Educators can consider adopting the text for their classes (sample poems can be shared). The book tour has not been lined up yet, so please let me know if you wish to host me! More info and pre-ordering available now at: https://redhen.org/book/birth-language/

Extra thanks to the lovely blurbs from Barbara Jane Reyes, Lee Herrick, Craig Santos Perez, Heid E. Erdrich and of course to Tia Chucha Press!

San Francisco Bay Area, especially the South Bay: I'm teaching a Creative Writing class at College of San Mateo that is open to all levels - if someone is not matriculated at CSM, it should not be too difficult, and folks can take my class at a low cost! Perhaps this is a fit for your students or friends and family w/flexible schedules.

We write to fun prompts, study craft, read poems and stories and watch spoken word, engage in workshops (poems and stories) and discuss the writing life, publication and performance. It combines three levels - 162-163 do independent projects. It was a lot of fun this past semester, and I'll only be offering it in Spring 2026 (until I can cycle back to teach it)! Send potential students to https://collegeofsanmateo.edu/ !

This was such a fun event “Poetry & the Mythic Imagination” last night at the Arts Research Center at UC Berkeley, with poet Jennifer Reimer & our facilitator Erika Higbee. Grateful for the deep conversation around myths, voices, water, time travel…the generous audience, & to be able to share work from both my first book from 2014, SOUVENIR, and my new manuscript.

Hi folks! So, the press for my first book SOUVENIR (2014), has just closed and it looks like the remaining copies are on (ugh) Amazon for a little bit longer.

This is a nudge that if you ever planned to get my book and never did, or want to gift it or teach it to students, put it in your store, library, etc., buy your copies now! I dont like having to support the big A., but after this, my book will be hard to get.

I hope to find a press who may republish it. It still gets taught quite a bit in colleges etc, and I hoped it would have a longer life.

In this compelling debut book by Aimee Suzara, a Filipino-American woman encounters narratives of her history – from the “living exhibits” of Filipinos in the 1904 World’s Fair to the migration of her family across seas and continents to the Wild West. The poems consider what souvenirs are kept as histories are buried, found and reinvented.

Writing in The Los Angeles Review of Books, Carribean Fragoza says of Souvenir: “Suzara unapologetically reclaims these relics — the stuff of museums, libraries, and archives — and reassembles them to break old historical narratives and sing life into new ones....Her songs gather together clashing voices that reveal colonization to be an exchange that is never unidirectional or uniform...The danger of narratives is that they can be perpetrated and inflicted again and again, for centuries. Poets like Aimee Suzara not only have the courage to handle these weapons of history, but they have the skill to disarm them. They have the ability to take apart the museum itself and reassemble it in unexpected ways.”
