KULARTS The nation's premiere presenter of contemporary and tribal Pilipino arts

KULARTS has three major program components:

KULARTS PRESENTS showcases contemporary and tribal Pilipino art through works by local American Pilipino and international Philippine artists. Kularts engages the public in contemporary and tribal Pilipino arts and culture through full-length concerts, evenings of shared programming, and through visual arts exhibits & installations. EDUCATION ARTS PROGRAM educates diverse American communities in Pilipino art forms and their influence on contemporary performing arts in both school and community settings. PHILIPPINE TRIBAL TOUR is a 2-3 week immersion tour of the Philippines' indigenous communities designed for U.S.-based artists.

Our deepest and heartfelt pasalamat to everyone who supported our latest production, “Burden of Proof.” We are truly blessed to have had 6 consecutive sold out shows. The KULARTS family is deeply honored that you chose to uplift and stand with the stories of those who have survived and risen above forces that attempt to silence them.

This story asks us to sit with discomfort, to confront hard truths, and to reflect on the realities that continue to shape our communities. We recognize the weight of that and we thank you for holding up that mirror and meeting it with openness and care. Thank you for going on this journey with the Calliano family through all the joys and hardships that life will present.

It is our hope that what you experienced doesn’t end when you leave the theater. That it lingers, sparks conversation, deepens understanding, and moves us all toward imagining and demanding a more just and compassionate world.

To the entire cast and crew of this production, your hearts are felt. Thank you for your care, honor, and compassion in developing this project for the past 2 years. To Jason Magabo Perez and Nanay Lenora Magabo Perez, we embrace you and keep your story in our hearts as we continue to share this experience beyond our generation. Thank you for being an example of resilience.

May the Mga Diwata continue to guide and bless our efforts as we move forward with touring this work, ensuring its impact reaches new audiences and resonates deeply with all who experience it.

Mabuhay tayong lahat! Taus punong pasa-salaamat!

Maraming Maraming salamat to Jason Magabo Perez and Nanay Leonora Magabo Perez for allowing us to hold your story and share it through dance theatre. 🕊️💐

We thank you and your family for your resilience and courage to continue to rise above all. In witnessing your survival, may we all recognize our own power in standing strong as an individual, as family, and as a community against all and any adversity.

The cast and creative team are privileged to be standing in your power and are empowered to keep on fighting, without fear.

Inspired by the true story of Pilipina nurses Leonora Perez and Filipina Narciso, who were wrongfully convicted and incarcerated for the 1975 deaths of patients at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, until a judge ordered their release due to the prosecutor’s “overwhelming prejudice.”

Burden of Proof by “Manai” Alleluia Panis ( ) is an immersive multimedia dance performance, that delves into the generational trauma inflicted by the American justice system and how traumatic experiences blur the line between memory and nightmare, told through the lens of the fictional Calinao immigrant family. Original sound score features text drawn from the diary of Leonora Magabo Perez and the writings of her son, Jason Magabo Perez ( ), 2024 San Diego Poet Laureate.
