The new exhibition
"Jim Marshall: Two Sides of the Same Coin" now at Terminal 2 San Francisco International Airport (SFO)up until March 14, 2027. The exhibition explores the work of legendary photographer Jim Marshall, whose images made in the Bay Area throughout the 1960s captured music, protest, and community, including The Beatles final live concert at Candlestick Park in 1966.

Celebrating World Photography Day.
Jim Marshall was never afraid to get in close to his subjects using his Summilux-M 1:1.4/50 ASPH lens. “When I am able to capture the essence of my subjects and show something of what they do or reveal who this person is, then I have achieved what I want to do. It is such an elusive thing, and sometimes I feel like a sniper waiting for that shot or moment to happen. It is the same discipline - steady, aim, focus, squeeze don’t jerk.” -Jim Marshall 1997.
This was Jim Marshall’s signature style like no other photographer no matter who the subject was.

Woodstock August 15-18 1969
57 years ago today Jim Marshall was an official photographer at Woodstock. Jim had all access to go anywhere and photograph whomever he wanted, capturing the most iconic photographs of the festival along with the spirit, the excitement and the bands of the generation that changed the world.

1. This shot was used as the centerpiece of the live three-album set “Woodstock: The Original Soundtrack and More”, released in 1970. Jim was afraid of heights but having been dosed by the Grateful Dead he thought he was a monkey and climbed up the stage scaffold to get this shot. He had borrowed a fish-eye lens from fellow photographer Bill Eppridge and put on his orange filter. Jim couldn’t remember how he got down from the scaffolding
2. Carlos Santana, under the influence of mescaline provided by Jerry Garcia, wrestling with his guitar that was “transformed” into a slithering snake as he was trying to hold onto while playing.

Jim Marshall was a master at capturing the moment even in the lowest light. A person in the know once said “Jim Marshall was the Cartier-Bresson of music photography”. I could not agree more.
