Children's Theatre Association of San Francisco The Children’s Theater Association of San Francisco is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to bringing live musical theater to school children.

CTA is an all volunteer organization that brings the magic of live theatre to school age children who might not otherwise attend a live performance. We have been offering musicals for over 80 years to Bay Area children for a no charge. Our six weekend performances are available to families to purchase and help support our mission.

Coming back to the theatre after the pandemic was about much more than returning to the stage. It was about rebuilding connection, confidence, creativity, and community.

For the cast, crew, families, and young audience members, that first season back was unforgettable. We had all experienced the absence of live performance, which made sharing stories together again feel even more meaningful.

CTA’s first season at the Presidio Theatre began with The Wizard of Oz in January 2020. After decades of performing across San Francisco, the company had finally found its home. Just weeks later, the curtain came down as the world changed.

Finding a permanent home changed what was possible for the Children’s Theater Association of San Francisco.

The Presidio Theatre offered more than a stage. It gave CTA a place to build traditions, welcome new generations of families, and continue sharing the joy of live theatre with the San Francisco community.

Since 2019, it has been the setting for countless performances and moments that have become part of CTA’s continuing story.

CTA’s dream was never temporary.

From the earliest years, members imagined a permanent home for children’s theatre in San Francisco, a place where creativity, community, and opportunity could always have a stage.

As the organization grew, so did the vision: to bring theatre to children not only in a theatre, but also in schools, neighborhoods, and community spaces across San Francisco.

This belief, that every child deserves a chance to experience imagination, creativity, and the magic of performance, has shaped CTA for generations.

Behind every CTA performance was a much larger dream: to create a theatre where children felt welcomed, considered, and inspired.

From the earliest days, Children’s Theatre Association members imagined more than a stage. They imagined a theatre experience shaped around children’s needs, curiosity, comfort, and sense of wonder.

That care and intention became part of CTA’s foundation, and it is still what makes the organization so special today.

One of the lesser-known chapters in CTA’s 92-year story is what happened when the stage went quiet.

During World War II, the Children’s Theatre Association paused its own productions and turned outward, volunteering at the Stage Door Canteen and supporting children’s programs across San Francisco.

It is a beautiful reminder that CTA’s mission has always reached beyond performance. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, this organization has been built on service, imagination, and care for children.

While many people across San Francisco have enjoyed CTA performances over the years, the history of the Children’s Theatre Association itself is just as remarkable.
