Dear SFSU Wind Ensemble community,

I wanted to share the sad news of the passing of one of our longest and dearest member's of the ensemble, Hank Niebolt.

Hank was a wonderful man, a great Tuba player, and a proud SFSU alumni who brought joy and music to the campus for decades. He loved every moment he got to make music with you all, and we will miss him.

Symphony’s upcoming multisensory performances of Scriabin’s Prometheus, taking place March 1-3. On March 3 at 1pm, there will be a preconcert talk with Mathilde Laurent (Perfumer and Creative Director, Cartier) and Phillippa Cole (Chief Artistic Officer, San Francisco Symphony). We are particularly encouraging students to attend this talk because it will add context to the performance and this unique collaboration.

Alexander Scriabin’s symphonic poem Prometheus, The Poem of Fire celebrates synesthesia and cosmic unity. Scriabin envisioned a total, mystical, consuming work of art that sublimed his audiences to another plane of consciousness. Devised by San Francisco Symphony Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen, pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Cartier in-house perfumer Mathilde Laurent, the San Francisco Symphony and Cartier present a multisensory production of Prometheus that aspires towards transcendence, aiming to realize Scriabin’s vision of a truly synesthetic work of art. This collaborative world premiere combines dynamic musical and light performance with olfactory curation, subsuming audiences in Scriabin’s creative vision more than a century after the piece of total art was composed

Alexander Scriabin’s Prometheus, The Poem of Fire comes to Davies Symphony Hall, March 1–3, 2024 in a new multisensory production presented by the San Francisco Symphony and Cartier.
