a collective of radio programmers called Radio Barrio Mission. We are inquiring about being able to do Radio workshops in the Mission District to low income communities, and underserved communities that are not represented in everyday radios. We would like to start a 3 month workshop to teach the basic skills of radio to youth/elders, and a second level of 3 months to apply the skills learned to p
roduce a radio segment. We have a building that is partially a tattoo shop Dermafilia Tribus Vivas, and gallery as well to start doing the workshops. We would like to offer the workshops at a low rate, or free, and if possible to get a donation. We would like to give access to the Mission district to test out our workshops, and give access to the airwaves to inform the mission district about news, benefits, community issues, and other relevant community events happening. Our first level workshops consist of teaching participants how to develop a story, and the outcome of what will the final presentation will be. It also allows participants to develop research on their topic, and who are possible interviewees they could interview about it. As a result they end up presenting after three months there issue, plan of action, and what they learned about the issues. At the same time we develop professional development, and how to apply it to their interactions with their interviewees when participants are ready to make contact in the second level of the workshop. Therefore, our second level of three months, participants follow their action plan to develop a radio program. They start by making questions for interviewees, adding details to their facts, and the impact in the community. Participants set up interviews with professionals, organizations, or community members to do interviews. Participants collect audio/video/ photos of their interviews, and develop their editing skills to create a collage of audios from their recordings. Participants will present their radio segment to family, and community to practice before they actually present on Radio. Participants will have the opportunity to be on air at KPFA Radio, on a show called Setting the standard which airs Mondays 1am-6am. Their segment will be played between 5am-6am, and kpfa is a part of the free speech network Pacifica Radio. They air out of 94.1fm KPFA, 89.3FM KPFB in Berkeley, 88.1 KFCF in Fresno, 97.5Fm in Santa Cruz. We would then give a certificate of completion of our workshop, and be able to put on their resume/ or get some credit in their junior college. As part of our workshop our professional development would be developing a resume and cover letter for participants to be successful in applying for employment. We appreciate any support you can offer us, or any guidance to making our radio workshops to become available to organizations, collectives, or institutions would be much appreciated.
